Billing Specialist - Union Power Cooperative

Union Power Cooperative has an immediate opening for a Billing Specialist who will provide billing services to all members by ensuring their accounts are kept in an accurate, thorough manner by properly and timely reconciling all transactions related to billing, including payments and adjustments, in order to maintain the integrity of all existing and future member's equity; while continuously remaining focused on the Cooperative's Mission and Vision Statements, and the promotion of the Cooperative's Guiding Values.
Essential Duties of the Position:
- Prepares member bills; including application of rate schedules, discounts, penalties, payments, adjustments, transfers to member accounts and pre-bill audits in accordance with established procedures.
- Prepares the monthly billing schedule for use throughout the organization.
- Ensures all meters are read on a nightly basis, or as required for billing purposes.
- Analyzes daily reports and monitors daily alerts to identify and act upon any automated meters that fail to communicate or that register usage while in an inactive status.
- Responsible for accurately and timely posting mail, lockbox, and other 3rd party payments to member accounts on a daily basis, as well as processing draft/ACH payments and preparing adjustments for returned items on a periodic basis.
- Researches and processes all credit refunds for member accounts.
- Responsible for monitoring uncollectible accounts and initiating write-offs within established guidelines.
- Participates in the process of allocating and retiring capital credits on a periodic basis, as required.
- Participates in the reconciliation of daily billing activity to ensure all routines are complete and accurate.
- Updates member accounts and initiates, processes and completes service orders as required.
- Assists with member inquiries and works to resolve complaints.
- Obtains and maintains a thorough working knowledge of software systems as pertains to duties and responsibilities assigned.
- Maintains access to confidential banking and member records.
- Prepares reports, correspondence and audit work papers, as required.
- Receives training as directed by the Billing Supervisor.
- Updates and maintains daily job procedures.
- Perform all duties assigned by supervision.
Work Qualifications:
- High school diploma or certificate of high school equivalency required. Associate's degree in Accounting or business-related field preferred.
- Five years of experience in accounting or related field required. Two plus years of experience in billing preferred.
- Previous utility industry experience preferred.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly demonstrate professionalism and diplomacy.
- Must publically represent the Cooperative well and must be able to effectively and professionally interact with other Cooperative employees, members, consultants, vendors and other contacts.
- Must be able to successfully work in a cross-functional team environment to discuss issues and achieve results.
- Must have excellent problem solving and organizational skills, be able to work under strict deadlines and be accurate, thorough and timely in performing duties.
- Must have basic math skills, be able to type by touch and be able to use standard office equipment.
- Must be proficient using standard operating systems and the Microsoft Office suite of applications. Basic MS Access skills acceptable. Intermediate MS Excel skills preferred.
- Working knowledge of Meridian's accounting and meter data management systems as well as Aclara's metering software systems preferred.
- Must be able to maintain confidential information.
- Must have reliable transportation and maintain regular and predictable attendance.
Working Conditions:
General office environment; may require flexibility to work irregular hours and occasional out of town travel to schools, seminars or conferences.
