The Purpose of Your Role
The billing specialist is responsible for assisting billing operations. They are responsible for enforcing policies and procedures and streamlining effective billing processes across multiple disciplines. The billing specialist performs all billing transactions and assists in the billing and collection operations to ensure accurate and timely submission of claims, payments, prompt collections, and aggressive denial management. They resolve complex billing issues and initiate innovative billing functions. This is a remote position.
Success Indicators/KPI’s
- A/R greater than 90 days 12% or less
- Claims exception rate of less than 2.5%
- Bad debt less than 1.5% of annual income

Responsibilities
- Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Billing Department
- Designs strategy for the department and sets goals for growth
- Completes all Train the Trainer coaching and responsibilities
- Trains new employees and coaches and develops existing employees
- Manages performance problems and terminations
- Supports problem resolution and decision-making
- Audits the team for accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness
- Manages and approves timecards, paid time off, and sick time
- Trains new and current billers, ensuring smooth workflow
- Maintains a thorough knowledge of all the payer contracts and ensures contract billing is timely and appropriate
- Maintains balance with the general ledger and budget
- Tracks, submits, appeals, and resolves denied claims, and analyzes reimbursements according to contractual agreements
- Performs a variety of duties, including accounts receivable, customer service, correspondence, and daily reconciliation of activities
- Manages unassigned payments and applies them to outstanding balances or submits requests for refund
- Acquires accurate benefits, including co-pays, co-insurance, deductible, etc.
- Coordinates benefits and transition between various levels of care
- Learns and practices de-escalation techniques (may occasionally be exposed to high-stress environments)
- Adheres to all company policies and procedures
- Other duties as assigned
The Skills and Expertise You Have
- 2+ years experience in medical billing - MUST HAVE LIGHTNING STEP EXPERIENCE
- Expertise in processing claims for insurance companies
- Demonstrates leadership and management capabilities
- Works and communicates effectively
- Familiarity with medical terminology and medical billing practices
- Proficient knowledge of computers, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and other computer software
- Accurate and efficient electronic data entry
- Must be punctual and maintain excellent attendance
- Organized, detail-oriented, takes the initiative, and completes job responsibilities independently
- Multitask, problem-solve, interpersonal skills, and strong written and verbal communication skills
- Thrives in a changing work environment, including inside, outside, and loud noise level
Preferred Qualifications
- Working knowledge of EMR software
