Job Summary:
The Bioinformatics Scientist manages and maintains next generation sequencing (NGS) data and software tools related to the NGS-based clinical testing performed in the Vanderbilt Medical Laboratory. This includes vendor and in-house developed NGS pipelines and databases which support the clinical testing in the laboratory. The Bioinformatics Scientist will be fully competent to perform a wide variety of professional level duties related to clinical NGS bioinformatics, working closely with the section Medical Director, Team Lead, and laboratory scientists to integrate NGS analysis pipelines for clinical whole exome sequencing, and NGS panels.

The VUMC Clinical Genomics Laboratory Department is in need of a Bioinformatics Scientist to join the team at our new Metro Center location!
Department Summary:
Our new 110,000-square-foot diagnostic core laboratory supports the needs of Vanderbilt University Medical Center's inpatient hospitals, outpatient clinics, regional hospitals, and extramural practice customers. Located five miles north of the 21st Avenue Nashville campus, the laboratory has expanded capacity to bring more testing to Vanderbilt, deploy innovative technology, improve patient care, and enhance team collaboration. The laboratory offers an expanded test menu supporting routine and specialized testing and aims to become the preferred reference laboratory provider in the southeast region.
Shift:
Monday - Friday
Hybrid - 1st shift
Key Responsibilities:
+ Apply Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) related bioinformatics knowledge and skills for an integration of the lab workflow, pipelines, annotation, variant analysis, and final reporting.
+ Performs bioinformatics related NGS secondary analysis, annotation, data management and integration.
+ Maintains the bioinformatics pipeline, uploads and transfer of data to the vendor cloud-based systems and enterprise grade storage accurately in daily practice.
+ Builds in-house tools and database for further evaluation and a full reanalysis.
+ Facilitates validation and verification of software changes and upgrades.
+ Establishes appropriate data security provisions and protocols to enable access to and maintenance of data and personal health information.
+ Serves as a liaison between software vendors and the laboratory for enhancements, troubleshooting and system management. On site support required.
Technical Capabilities:
+ Data Analysis (Novice): The ability to analyze NGS bioinformatic data in an accurate manner. The ability to write a script for bioinformatics application (by using programming languages such as Python).
+ Data Verification (Novice): The ability to verify data in an accurate manner.
+ Documentation (Novice): Ensures that all documentation is complete, accurate, thorough, and compliant.
+ Data Entry (Novice): The ability to transcribe information from the original source into an electronic system according to written and verbal instructions efficiently and accurately.
+ Ad Hoc Reporting (Novice): The ability to access information from databases and prepare reports.
