HJF is seeking a full-time Biostatistician II to support the Suicide Care, Prevention, and Research (CPR) Initiative in the Medical and Clinical Psychology (MPS) department within the Uniformed Services University (USU) in Bethesda, Maryland. This position is located at MPS offices in Rockville, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to USU.
The Biostatistician II is responsible for providing biostatistical support for multiple military suicide prevention research projects, including the conduct of clinical trials, and overseeing all aspects of the data management process. Responsibilities include: study planning, development of data collection forms and measures; development and maintenance of data collection, management, and analysis plans; data reconciliation and cleaning; tracking study recruitment; performing statistical analysis on data collected from clinical trials and other research studies; and preparation of recruitment reports and results for publication, presentation, and delivery to study sponsors.
The Suicide CPR Initiative, previously known as the Laboratory for the Treatment of Suicide-Related Ideation and Behavior, was established in 2006. Dr. Holloway, the Director of the Suicide CPR Initiative, is a clinical psychologist and an intervention scientist who is primarily interested in developing and empirically evaluating novel interventions for suicide risk reduction. The Suicide CPR Initiative is strategically in a unique position to focus on the problem of military suicide, given its origins at USU and its established partnerships with the Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs, as well as national and international collaborators and stakeholders. Overall, the mission of the Suicide CPR Initiative is threefold: CARE: To develop effective interventions targeted at reducing suicidal thoughts and/or behaviors; PREVENTION: To save lives through education, intervention, science, and advocacy; RESEARCH: To advance suicide intervention science and practice.
The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Responsibilities:- Performs cross sectional and longitudinal statistical analysis, conducts power analyses, and assists with preparation of data analysis and results sections for manuscripts, conference presentations, and sponsor reports.
- Collaborates with investigators and other data managers/biostatisticians and provides guidance in appropriate statistical methods as well as input into design, methodology, sample size estimation, and data analytic plans for grant proposals, Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols, and ongoing studies.
- Understands, develops, and executes all aspects of empirical data management (e.g., data collection form design, data entry instructions and coding manuals, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), data management and quality assurance plans, resource planning, data status tracking).
- Serves as a member of the data analytic team, and ensures quality and accuracy of work, realistic deadlines are set, and appropriate resources are available to accomplish tasks. Regularly monitors progress to ensure that critical elements are proceeding on schedule.
- Contributes to multiple, highly complex and/or large studies concurrently. Tracks recruitment numbers and prepares recruitment reports and CONSORT diagrams for manuscripts and study sponsors. Maintains study information on clinicaltrials.gov.
- Provides some data management and statistical training and mentorship for junior-level staff and doctoral students. Participates in regular meetings.
- May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree
- Minimum of 6-8 years experience required
or
- Master's Degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Quantitative Psychology, or a related field required.
- Minimum of 3-5 years experience required
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of statistics and study design; experience in the design of clinical trials
- Proficiency in Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and/or other data analytic software (e.g., SAS, Stata, R)
- Knowledge of databases and other software such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
- Knowledge of REDCap and survey collection software (e.g., Qualtrics)
- Experience in data management, statistical analysis of longitudinal or repeated measurement data ability to communicate effectively
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
- Prior experience with psychology research, clinical trials, military mental health, and/or suicide research highly desired.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check
Physical Capabilities
- Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
Work Environment
- This position will take place primarily in an office setting.
Compensation:
- The annual salary range for this position is $73,800-$100,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
