Board Member (Member at Large)
The mission of HandsOn San Diego (HOSD), fiscally sponsored by Mission Edge San Diego, is to strengthen communities through volunteer action. Objective:
In connection with the Executive Director, Board Chair and other board members, members at large serve as a liaison to the general membership. Duties will change as defined in organization bylaws or as needed to fulfill board requirements and address overall organizational goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Partners with the Executive Director to achieve HOSD’s vision and mission
- Acts as a spokesperson and a public advocate for HOSD
- Participates in the strategic planning process
- Discusses issues confronting HOSD with the Executive Director and Board Chair
- Helps guide and mediate Board actions with respect to organizational priorities and governance concerns
- Reviews issues of concerns with the Executive Director and Board Chair
- Monitors financial planning and reports o Plays a leadership role in the organization’s fundraising activities
- Helps recruit new Board members
- Works with the Board Chair to formally evaluate the performance of the Executive Director on an annual basis
- Annually evaluates the performance of HOSD and whether it is achieving its vision and mission
Fundraising
- In collaboration with the Board, generating substantial annual revenue and fostering HOSD’s overall financial health
- Personally, treating HOSD as a top philanthropic priority reflected in an annual financial gift, based upon what is financially feasible for the Board Secretary
- Identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major individual donors, corporate, and/or foundation gifts
Qualifications:
Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
- Demonstrated success as a nonprofit board member
- A commitment to and understanding of HOSD’s beneficiaries and mission preferably based on experience
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of HOSD’s beneficiaries
Board Terms:
Board member is elected by the Board at-large and serves for a two-year term. Board member is eligible to be re-elected to a second, consecutive two-year term at the discretion of the Board at-large.
Service on HOSD’s board of directors is without remuneration, except with prior approval from the ED for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to board members’ duties.
