About the camp
Bear Creek Aquatic Camp is a traditional overnight summer camp owned and operated by Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana. Located south of Benton, Kentucky, this 183-acre camp has 2.3 miles of shoreline on beautiful Kentucky Lake. Bear Creek offers campers a variety of aquatic sports including sailing, kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing, and swimming. Our program hosts Girl Scouts entering grades 4 through 12 with up to 70 campers per session. Programs are run by paid camp staff and Girl Scout volunteers.

About the role
Right now, the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana is looking for a full-time Boating Director will help ensure the ultimate summer camp experience for our campers and staff. The Boating Director oversees our boating related programs, facilities, and equipment. The Boating Director will train and supervise Boating Assistants, Unit staff and campers in boating areas and support varying needs around camp. Key functions of this role include overseeing a progression of boating instruction, creating rotation schedules for teaching and watching/guarding boats, planning regular drills, and maintaining safety standards. Compensation

The salary for the Boating Director (Bear Creek Aquatic Camp) position is $5,000 for the entire seasonal contract.

Staff training will be held May 27 - June 6, with additional training and set-up time for some staff from May 23 - May 25.

Key Responsibilities

â— Responsible for overall safety of campers and staff using boating equipment.

â— Train and supervise boating staff.

â— Oversee boating instruction and programs including sailing, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, windsurfing.

â— Oversee camper programs on a motorized pontoon boat.

â— Develop and assign tasks (based on day-to-day operations and goals) and assign tasks to staff, oversee completion of these tasks.

â— Oversee and facilitate boat usage within Girl Scout Bay and out in Kentucky Lake. Rescue/tow stranded sailboats if needed using motor boats.

â— Perform routine checks to check the health of equipment, facilities, and programs and works with Camp Director and Site Manager to communicate maintenance needs.

â— Participate as a member of the Director Team to support others when needed and act as Camp Director when Director and Assistant Director are unavailable.

â— Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT

â— Non-traditional and long work hours are expected.

â— The Boating Director may be asked to sleep in a unit with other staff members separate (but near) campers with restrooms a short walk away.

â— Daily exposure to various weather conditions, plants, and animals.

â— Walk/hike several miles daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain.

â— Daily swimming, boating, and life guarding in lake water.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION

â— Must be certified (or willing and prepared to become certified during staff training) in First Aid, CPR, AED, Waterfront Life guarding, and Youth Mental Health First Aid.

â— Other certifications and outdoor or boating skills/knowledge are a plus

EXPERIENCE

â— 1 year of working in childcare, youth program, or camp.

â— 1 year of supervisory and administrative experience preferred

â— Highly preferred: experience captaining a motorized boat, boat rescues

â— Highly preferred: experience with kayaks, canoes, sailboards, stand-up paddleboards, Aqua Finn and Flying Scot or similar sailboats

SPECIFIC SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS

â— 21+ years of age

â— Meet state, federal, and ACA requirements for summer camp employment

â— Strong communication, written, and public speaking skills

â— Adaptable and flexible within a fast-paced working environment

â— Organized and consistent

â— Provide exemplary customer service

â— Able to pull up to an overview of the entire goal and problem solve accordingly

â— Comfortable and competent driving automatic trucks and motorized boats.

â— Must have valid driver's license with a safe driving record meeting company standards.

â— Swim proficiently and comfortably in all types of water conditions

POSITION COMPETENCIES

â— Must complete courses and be certified in American Red Cross Life guarding, First Aid, CPR, & AED, Youth Mental Health First Aid prior to start of the first camp session.

â— Must obtain Kentucky Boating License prior to the start of staff training.

â— Comfortable and competent driving motorized boats and automatic trucks.

â— Access to reliable transportation.

â— Valid driver's license and proof of insurance.

â— Meet state, federal, and ACA requirements for summer camp employment.

â— Complete a background check and provide other forms and details.

â— Promote a culture of open communication and mutual respect.
