POSITION SUMMARY: The Covington branch is the oldest and largest branch in the Kenton County Library system. The branch encompasses three levels and recently underwent a full renovation that was completed in 2012. This expanded the facility to over 60,000 sq. ft. Last year saw nearly 200,000 visitors, more than 250,000 items checked out, over 12,000 guests use public meeting space and just short of 25,000 people attend programs. The branch houses the Local History and Genealogy Department as well as a growing STREAM center and workforce development presence. The branch also provides passport application acceptance and notary services and is a Pearson Vue certified testing center.
The Branch Manager is responsible for the planning, administration, and evaluation of branch services and programs as well as overseeing the staffing and maintenance of the building. This position provides extensive interaction with the public and requires significant collaboration with other staff members as they seek to align the branch with strategic planning initiatives and work to instill and perpetuate key organizational values.
Covington Branch typically has 50-55 staff members.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Work cooperatively with Administration to establish, implement, and evaluate procedures for branch functions.
- Works with the Executive Director to plan and implement strategic goals and to design strategies to meet the needs of the service area.
- Organize and oversee branch services including circulation, collection maintenance, reference, programming, and maintenance in a patron-oriented fashion.
- Supervise branch staff including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluation.
- Collaborate with supervisors to ensure full staffing of facilities and that a safe environment is provided.
- Assist Administration in planning and policy setting for the facility; represents branch on the Administrative Team and participates in system-wide decision making.
- Ensure that every customer is provided with service in a friendly, efficient manner and work to adapt physical space to meet the evolving needs of the library patron.
- Work with Collection Development staff in selection, presentation, withdrawal, and replacement of materials.
- Monitor branch budget and submit report on branch activities and statistics monthly.
- Work in conjunction with STREAM and Workforce Development coordinators to provide and tailor those and other evolving services to patron needs.
- Work in conjunction with Facilities Coordinator to ensure the exterior and interior maintenance needs of the branch are met. Provide a welcoming space for all.
- Participate in community groups and function as liaison with organizations within the branch service area to develop partnerships that will benefit the library.
- Perform duties of other branch staff as necessary.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- MLS from an ALA accredited university required.
- Minimum five years progressively responsible supervisory experience.
- Excellent communication and public relations skills.
- Experience working in an urban environment desired.
- Initiative-taking team leader: one that exhibits and promotes excellent customer service skills and empowers others to take risks and not fear failure.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision and to provide supervision to others.
- Interpersonal skills to effectively deal with the public and coworkers in a positive, professional manner.
- Must have sense of humor and empathetic nature.
- Must be flexible, welcoming to innovation, and readily adaptable to change.
- Experience using windows-based PCs and software. Ability and willingness to learn, adapt, and teach new technologies.
- Must be able to stand, bend, stoop, stretch, reach, and kneel.
- Must be able to lift and carry items weighing 30 lbs. and push book trucks or bins weighing 100+ lbs.
