GENERAL SUMMARY
The Building Inspector reports to the Building Director and inspects commercial, residential, agricultural, and accessory structures of the Nisqually Indian Tribe at various stages of construction for code compliance. The Building Inspector will issue violation notices, stop-work orders, and permits for construction, as needed, while maintaining a confidential and accurate record of work and reporting.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary responsibilities are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform. - Conduct on-site inspections for compliance with Nisqually Indian Tribe Title 54 building codes which cover new building, existing building, residential, mechanical, plumbing, fuel gas, fire, flood, and referenced codes. Aspects of inspection include but are not limited to: soil bearing, foundations, footings, concrete slab, under-floor, mechanical, plumbing, framing, insulation, lighting, wallboard, fire resistive penetrations, fire resistive wall construction, building exterior setbacks to slopes, erosion control measures in the field, wood stoves, gas-piping and verification of property line setbacks and monitoring of erosion control elements in the field.
- Inspect buildings moved within or into the County, and mobile and modular homes for compliance with codes and current structural requirements.
- Inspects rentals for code violations as part of the resolution in Landlord-Tenant disputes.
- Interpret codes, engineering and ordinances for public, staff, contractors, architects, or engineers concerning building, plumbing, mechanical, energy and fire codes, barrier free regulations and zoning ordinances.
- Read and accurately interprets plans for specifications, and compare them with construction in progress.
- Utilize spreadsheets, word documents and the intent to conduct research, write reports and record data in records management system.
- Study new or alternative construction techniques for compliance with alternate methods allowed under the code.
- Complete and maintain inspection reports confidentially.
- In certain emergency situations, inspect structures to determine stability and is the authority to make instant decisions concerning the occupancy of the structure.
- Effectively communicate, establishes and maintains positive relationship with coworkers, customers and public and enforces regulations with firmness, tact and impartiality.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or GED.
- Five years' experience in all phases of building construction or two years of building code review or inspection experience.
- Must have current Washington State Driver's License and be insurable under the Tribe's policy.
- International Code Council (ICC) Commercial Inspector or Residential Inspector certification required.
- NIT requires and supports the completion of multiple training courses, and the attainment and maintenance of related certifications. Within the first three (3) years of employment, required certifications include:
- ICC Mechanical Inspector certification or International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO)Plumbing Inspector certification.
- ICC Mechanical Inspector and IAMPO Plumbing Inspector certifications.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Associates Degree in Building Inspection; or ICC Commercial or Residential Inspector certifications; or ICC Mechanical Inspector certification; or IAPMO Plumbing Inspector certification.
SUPERVISION
This position does not supervise.
