The City of Fairfield is accepting applications for a Building Maintenance Worker I/II/III vacancy within the Public Works Department! The deadline to apply is December 2, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. with interviews tentatively scheduled for the week of December 16, 2024.
Building Maintenance Workers perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks to ensure the upkeep and functionality of essential facilities, including police stations, fire stations, water treatment plants, and other critical buildings. This role encompasses work across multiple trades, such as carpentry, plumbing, and electrical systems, as well as technical support for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment.
Responsibilities include maintaining and repairing essential building systems and overseeing operations within a central utility plant to ensure efficient and reliable facility performance. This position offers advancement through Levels I, II, and III, expanding scope and responsibility based on experience and skill development.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Primarily inside work, with some outside assignments. Includes exposure to unsanitary conditions, odors, cleaning chemicals, and some noise. May include exposure to heights and potential electrical shock. Also involves evening and weekend work; some work done in isolation.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Includes transporting light to heavy objects (up to 100 lb.); reaching, pushing, pulling, crawling, climbing, stooping, prolonged periods of standing; manual dexterity, vision and hearing.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
- Building Maintenance Worker I: This is the entry level position in the Building Maintenance Worker Series. Work is initially done under close supervision, with greater independence as experience is gained. This is a "flexibly staffed" position; incumbents may advance to a higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency.
- Building Maintenance Worker II: This is the journey level position within the Building Maintenance Worker series. Experience allows greater independence of performance of duties exceeding that of Building Maintenance Worker I.
- Building Maintenance Worker III: This is the advanced journey level position within the Building Maintenance Worker series. Positions in this class are assigned a variety of tasks in the building trades. Work requires the use of specialized tools. Building Maintenance Worker IIIs can work unsupervised and in the absence of the Senior Building Maintenance Worker assumes supervision responsibilities of other members of the building maintenance and janitorial staff.
