JOB TITLE: BUS DRIVER
JOB SUMMARY:The Bus Driver is responsible for safely operating the school bus according to a set daily schedule. He/she must ensure that the school bus is in good operating condition at all times, pick up and drop off students as per the schedule, maintain order and security on the bus and obey all laws, regulations, and rules of conduct.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Advises students and other passengers of appropriate behavior for the purpose of reinforcing established guidelines and maintaining passenger safety.
- Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents and/or potential emergency situations (e.g. road hazards, medical emergencies, accidents, etc.) for the purpose of resolving and/or recommending a resolution to the situation.
- Assists students and other passengers for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from buses during normal transport as well as during emergency situations.
- Attends in-service trainings, department briefings, and workshops as required for the purpose of gathering information required to perform the job functions.
- Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g. tire pressure, exterior condition, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safe operating condition of the vehicle and compliance with mandated guidelines.
- Prepares and submits reports (e.g. field trip reports, incident reports, inspection records, passenger misconduct, mileage logs, students counts, seating charts, routing information, oral reports, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safe operating condition of the vehicle and complying with mandated guidelines.
- Reports observations and/or incidents (e.g. discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, route hazards, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to the appropriate personnel to ensure the safety of all passengers.
- Ensure that the bus always has sufficient fuel.
- Operates the bus in such a way that all road and safety regulations are always followed and immediately reports any traffic citations or violations to the Director of Transportation.
- Follows procedures to guarantee no child is left alone on the bus without adult supervision at any time, including insuring all children have departed the bus at the end of all bus routes (morning, evening, and ruing field trips or other special trips)
- Keeps the bus clean and free of debris; follows other bus cleaning procedures.
- Prepares passengers for emergency situations, to include, but not limited to, conducting required safety drills.
- Performs other duties as required. Nothing in this job description restricts management’s right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time.
- Deal with residents and members of the public, as well as students and employees, in a courteous and respectful manner.
- Demonstrates responsible leadership during all trips, including local and long distance trips.
- Ability to learn and comprehend information from Procedures Manuals and other materials.
EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess a valid license to drive a school bus, which will include a Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or Class B with P and S endorsements).
- Must possess an Oklahoma School Bus Certificate, which includes 25 hours of training in a state approved course.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Must possess the manual dexterity sufficient to operate the bus, conduct pre-trip inspections, and clean the bus.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
- Must be able to travel, enter, and exit a vehicle without assistance and withstand exposure to adverse weather conditions.
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
- Must submit to initial drug and alcohol test, as well as continual random drug and alcohol tests.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- 173-day work calendar
- Salary to be established by the Board.

- Non-Exempt Support
EVALUATION:Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy of evaluation for classified personnel.
