What You’ll Do
Reporting to the Manager of Legal Operations, the Legal Business Analyst is responsible for supporting the Law Group Leadership and Legal Operations teams by optimizing financial planning and reporting (including budgeting). This role contributes to the Company's success by providing global departmental and cross-functional support to the organization through the development of financial and operating efficiencies for Legal.
The successful candidate liaises with the Law Group’s finance and procurement department representatives, as well as with external vendors, such as outside counsel and other legal service providers.
Responsibilities/Function:
- Partners closely with the Manager of Legal Operations to support the management, development and monitoring of the Department and Outside Counsel budgets. Accuracy of work product is critical to the success of the position.
- Responsibilities include financial planning and reporting encompassing internal and outside counsel budgeting and forecasting, working with finance partners on accruals and reserves, as well as measuring performance against budgets and communicating financial information both within and outside of the Law Group.
- Assists with instituting and enforcing financial policies, procedures and internal controls within the Law Group. Ensures that proper processes and deadlines are met, and also develops and implements internal processes and procedures to support and comply with finance policy and procedures.
- Leads on the development of meaningful financial reports and spend tracking methodologies to facilitate financial transparency. This will include data on outside counsel fees, indemnity reserves and other financial data relevant to the Department. Assures that recorded and reported information is valid, properly charged, and accurate.
- Develops and maintains complex analyses leveraging various data sources, legal industry knowledge and advanced Excel skills. Provides ongoing support on the use and interpretation of analyses, reports, methodologies, systems and source data, acting as a significant information resource.
- Leads and/or assists on high priority, ad hoc projects for the leadership and direct reports of the leadership. Performs special studies/projects of complex scope, which require independent development of innovative analytical approaches to resolve issues related to financial management and achieve functional area and organizational objectives.
- Conducts analysis on data for insight on opportunities to improve business practices and reduce costs.
Who We’re Looking For
- Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Finance or Accounting.
- Minimum 4-four years of financial planning and analysis, and budgeting experience. Legal industry strongly preferred.
- Expert proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, including advanced functions such as graphics, V lookup, pivot tables, macros and database management, as well as the presentation of data in professional slide decks.
Preferred qualifications, knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Regularly contributes to the development of new financial analysis concepts, techniques, and standards.
- Operational experience with legal spend, including Matter Management and E-Billing Systems such as Legal Tracker (f/k/a Serengeti Tracker).
- Advanced written and oral communication skills. Strong customer service orientation.
- Must take initiative and be proactive in communicating promptly with client base, attorneys and staff regarding billing/invoice inquiries and issues as needed. Solution-focused.
- Must be able to work in a fast paced, deadline driven environment with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated diligence, attention-to-detail and follow-through skills.
- Demonstrated time management and project management.
Specific Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Design standard and advanced report templates
- Train and support attorneys and other associates reporting capabilities available to them
- Analyze and ensure the processing of billing adjustments for client billing errors, billing changes, negotiated fee arrangements and support any client/Company reorganization
- Ensure the quality and timeliness of information entered into the Law Group e-billing system
- Collects, maintain and organize data and information necessary for Annual Strategic Review presentation and memoranda and Board of Directors reports, presentations and updates.
- Performs all billing related responsibilities includin review and approval of invoices, timekeeper rate review, resolution of complex billing issues, electronic invoice processing, and responding to various inquiries. Maintains updates and provides support to the legal team on the invoicing system. Ability to research and propose solutions to system issues.
- In coordination with Procurement, drives Outside Counsel timekeeper rate and alternative fee evaluation and tracking process.
- Leads implementation of SAP, Shared Services and e-billing process or requirement changes or updates. Prepares related project and communication plan(s) and timeline(s).
- Provides support to Legal Operations Manager on legal billing strategy and spend management.

Lam offers a variety of work location models based on the needs of each role. Our hybrid roles combine the benefits of on-site collaboration with colleagues and the flexibility to work remotely and fall into two categories – On-site Flex and Virtual Flex. ‘On-site Flex’ you’ll work 3+ days per week on-site at a Lam or customer/supplier location, with the opportunity to work remotely for the balance of the week. ‘Virtual Flex’ you’ll work 1-2 days per week on-site at a Lam or customer/supplier location, and remotely the rest of the time.
Salary
CA San Francisco Bay Area Salary Range for this position: $64,500.00 - $128,000.00.
The above salary range for this position is relevant to applicants that reside or work onsite in the California, San Francisco Bay Area only. Salary offers will depend on factors that include the location you work from, your level, education, training, specific skills, years of experience and comparison to other employees already in this role. Actual salary may vary from salary offered due to numerous factors including but not limited to unpaid time off, unpaid leave, company mandated shutdown, and other relevant factors.
