JOB SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of an anesthesiologist, an incumbent of this class is responsible for assisting the professional surgical staff by setting up, calibrating, sterilizing, operating and checking all anesthesia equipment to be used on patients being prepared for surgery. This is the staff level position, wherein incumbents are required to have previous hospital experience and a general understanding of basic asepsis and sterile techniques used in an operating room in order to operate and maintain equipment and supplies
- Provides specific aspects of patient care, inventory control, equipment maintenance, and data collection for the Anesthesia Department.
- Requisitions anesthesia supplies in coordination with Materials Management and the Director of Supply Chain
- Properly stock and store materials in accordance with hospital guidelines and JCAHO standards.
- Participates in the evaluation, requisition, and care of anesthesia equipment.
- Collaborates with Biomed on preventive maintenance and repairs of anesthesia equipment in a timely manner.
- Maintains equipment and supply inventory in all related areas including ORs, supply rooms, and difficult airway carts.
- Responsible for the cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of appropriate anesthesia equipment in accordance with hospital infection control policy and procedure.
- Provides equipment trouble shooting services intraoperatively and reports any unsafe conditions to the appropriate Supervisors.
- Collects anesthesia case data and patient charge information for billing, statistical or Quality Assurance purposes.
- Provides statistical information as it pertains to the Anesthesia Department.
- Prepares anesthesia machine, wall suction, and ventilators for use.
- Prepares intravenous lines for use during fluid and blood transfusion.
- Prepares cart with supplies, syringes, and intubation equipment in accordance with prescribed protocol.
- Locates and prepares specialty equipment such as syringe pumps, fluid warmers, and warming blankets.
- Prepares and calibrates transducers and equipment for invasive monitoring.
- Assists anesthesiologists and CRNAs as required, including being available at the beginning of a general anesthetic and the end to prepare the room for further cases.
- Has knowledge of restraint policy and procedure and demonstrates appropriate application and intervention.
- Prepares equipment for age specific groups as indicated: pediatric (gt;1 ndash; 12 years), adolescent (gt;12 ndash; 17 years), adult (gt;17 ndash; 65 years), and geriatric (gt;65 years).
- Has a firm understanding of daily expectations, task, and other duties assigned by Anesthesia Leadership.
- Performs additional tasks as requested within the scope of responsibility.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school or equivalency diploma
- Additional specialty education desirable.
- BLS certification required by the end of employee provisional period.
- Must maintain required certifications.
- Responsible to the Anesthesia Department, and to the CRNA supervisor(s).
- Participates on teams created to improve outcome quality through process improvement and team technologies.
- One year of experience in a health or patient-care related field including six months of training and experience working in an operating room
Physical Requirements:
- May require prolonged periods of sitting or standing.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
