About the Job
The Division of Healthy Start Systems is in the Child, Adolescent, and Family Health Bureau (CAFH) at the Boston Public Health Commission. The mission of the Division to promote infant, maternal, and family health with a focus on reducing health inequities. The Division includes the following programs: Boston Healthy Start Initiative, Healthy Baby/Healthy Child, Healthy Start in Housing, Welcome Family, and Shirley's Food Pantry. These programs provide support to clients through care coordination, connection to resources, health education, and advocacy.
The Community Action Network (CAN) is a coalition of community residents and representatives from government, service agencies, health care and other groups working together to reduce racial and ethnic inequities in infant mortality and poor birth outcomes. CAN approaches these issues through engaging the community in leadership roles to increase public awareness and change policies and systems, with a specific focus on addressing social determinants of health. Community leadership and partnership are core to the work of the CAN. The CAN is a part of BPHC's Boston Healthy Start Initiative (BHSI), a federally funded initiative to reduce racial and ethnic inequities in birth outcomes.
DUTIES
* Under supervision of BHSI Director , lead coordination and facilitation of the core CAN planning team, full CAN membership, and CAN workgroups to collaboratively develop, implement, and monitor a plan to develop and implement policy and systems approaches to reducing racial inequities in birth outcomes.
* Facilitate CAN meetings to support collaborative planning and decision making for all CAN activities.
* Develop and support CAN meeting structure, procedures, and tools to support planning and implementation of CAN activities.
* Assist in the development and implementation of a training and technical assistance plan to support the CAN in building leadership capacity among members, including their capacity to work directly with decision/policymakers and support achievement of CAN goals. Provide direct training and technical assistance as appropriate.
* Maintain a system to track CAN activities, processes, outcomes, and progress.
* Parter with BHSI leadership and the CAN Consultant on an ongoing basis to identify opportunities to strengthen the CAN.
* Maintain proactive and consistent engagement with the community and stakeholders to initiate and nurture collaborative relationships, which is integral to all aspects of the coordinator role.
* Develop innovative strategies for meeting programmatic objectives and goals, including those centered around CAN priorities, fostering creativity and adaptability in achieving desired outcomes.
* Assist BHSI Director to coordinate the work of CAN with relevant BPHC offices such as Communications, Inter-Governmental Relations, Health Equity, and Community Engagement.
* Coordinate CAN community outreach and engagement efforts, including recruitment and orientation of new members.
* Develop and oversee distribution of all communications, brochures, newsletters, social media and web content, and other educational materials.
* Prepare CAN progress reports for director, funders, members, and the community.
* Prepare proposals, poster presentations, and articles to highlight the work of the CAN for the funder, the field, and the community.
* Coordinate and attend community meetings and events.
* Help manage contracts and MOUs with consultants that provide support to the CAN.
* Assist in the development and management of the CAN budget.
* Working to help BPHC become an antiracist organization by meeting or exceeding the standards set by the BPHC Anti-Racism Policy.
* Perform other duties as required.
* BA/BS plus 2 years of equivalent experience in public health program coordination, management and/or community organizing; OR Master's Degree in Public Health, Health Policy Administration, or a related discipline, such as sociology, organizational psychology, public health nursing, or health communications required.
* Experience designing and implementing public health or health related programs and initiatives.
* Knowledge and experience in collective impact, coalition work, community organizing, and with health education and health promotion strategies strongly preferred.
* Demonstrate passion for and/or previous experience working with mothers and fathers, ensuring empathy, and understanding in addressing their needs within the context of the role.
* Possess knowledge of or passion for racial equity and addressing social determinants of health, actively incorporating these principles into program development and implementation to promote health equity.
* Ability to write clear, concise reports, and to follow and to give written and oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner.
* Experience planning community meetings and events.
* Ability to facilitate meetings.
* Promote health equity, inclusion, and diversity within the BPHC, department and community.
* Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the role of public health in addressing racism, the social determinants of health, and inequities in health outcomes as well as strategies to advance racial justice and health equity.
* Advanced experience with and knowledge of local community agencies.
