The Carpenter Journeyman is responsible for assembling and construction techniques, including framing, finishing, woodworking, pouring concrete, laying blocks and bricks, installing ceiling grids, and installing vinyl and laminate flooring within the Swisher headquarters and campus.
Key Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings
- Work with craftspersons including carpenters, electricians, plumbers, painters, and mechanics to ensure efficient operation of construction projects
- Learn assembly and construction techniques, including framing, finishing, woodworking, pouring concrete, laying blocks and bricks, installing ceiling grids, and installing vinyl and laminate flooring
- Adhere to all safety protocols including lockout/tagout (LOTO), fall protection, and environmental regulations
- Gain proficiency in the use of carpenter shop tools and equipment under supervision
- Perform maintenance tasks under guidance to ensure construction safety and reliability
- Troubleshoot construction-related problems with guidance and support
- Assist with the installation of new construction systems and refurbishments
- Ensure all work is performed in compliance with safety regulations and building codes
- Participate in training sessions and learning opportunities to improve skills and knowledge
- Assist with maintaining the inventory of equipment and supplies
- Ensure that all tools and equipment are properly maintained and stored
- Perform maintenance-related general cleanup of facilities as needed
- Respond to emergency work requests as directed by supervisors
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 3+ years of carpentry, facility maintenance, or hands-on construction experience, preferably in commercial projects
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong communication skills
- Willingness to learn and take direction from experienced carpenters
- Ability to work a regular schedule, which may include weekends and holidays
- Valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of a vocational training program in carpentry or a related field
- Familiarity with carpentry procedures and safety regulations
- Knowledge of building codes as they pertain to carpentry and construction
- Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions and procedures related to carpentry tasks
- Basic understanding of construction materials and woodworking processes
- Computer literacy and the ability to learn and use maintenance management systems
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and documentation related to carpentry systems
- Effective verbal and written communication skills to clearly report issues and work progress
- Related experience working in offices and manufacturing environments
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
- Must be able to climb ladders and perform overhead work
- Must be able to bend, squat, and perform tasks on the floor
- Must be able to walk and stand for prolonged periods of time
- Must be able to operate hand and power tools for extended periods of time
