Department Summary
The Cascadia Region Earthquake Hazards Center (CRESCENT) is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded research center that coordinates research, educational, and community engagement activities surrounding earthquake science and hazards in the Pacific Northwest. The center is operated out of the University of Oregon and involves researchers and students in the Department of Earth Sciences, but its activities also involve a broad consortium of groups external to the University and within the U.S.
The Department of Earth Sciences is an instructional department within the College of Arts and Sciences that supports significant research activities in many fields of Earth and Environmental Science. The Department includes approximately 25 tenure track faculty, many of whom have large research grants, 30 research assistants and associates, 42 graduate students, and 90 undergraduate majors.
Position Summary
The Developer works within CRESCENT at the University of Oregon and is focused on creating cyberinfrastructure to support an interdisciplinary science program centered on data curation, management, and use. The CRESCENT community includes scientists, education and outreach specialists, engineers, and other stakeholders with varying interests, which all utilize the cyberinfrastructure in some capacity. This position will work towards expanding research, increasing competitiveness for grant proposals through collaboration, and impacting the success of research publications. Duties include technical consulting, collaboration on long-term projects, performing data analysis, developing tools for data use and management, and providing expert training.
The Developer will engage in the development and implementation of topical workshops and short courses, training programs, present research at conferences, while incorporating distance learning. This position provides outreach and engagement to support bringing STEM learning to underrepresented groups and underserved communities. Additionally, this position will coordinate the programmatic or institutional requirements of sponsors, University of Oregon, and a broad range of external collaborators, while supporting researchers and organizations wishing to use CRESCENT products.
The Developer reports to the Assistant Director for CRESCENT. The position requires the ability to work independently, take initiative, and think strategically. This position will conduct independent research and work with complex data systems, communicate findings and trends to decision-makers, and provide methodological and analytical leadership.
Minimum Requirements
• Master's degree in Earth Sciences, Data Science, Computer Science or a related field.
• Two years of progressively responsible experience in research, project management, or education.
• Experience with technical science writing, or science communication.
• Experience with statistical analysis, computational methods, or machine learning.

• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Strong organizational and analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail.
• Strong working knowledge of earthquake science and earthquake hazards.
• Ability to develop a work plan and timeline based on grant guidelines; work effectively with collaborators; and ensure submissions meet deadline targets.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities with overlapping deadlines and frequent interruptions while maintaining a high level of customer service and professionalism.
• Understands research program funding through grants process.
• Strong technical writing and editing skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of constituents. Adept in multiple media formats including in-person, written, graphical, social media.
• Demonstrated cultural competency and experience, as well as ability to develop knowledge of and respect for those from a broad array of cultures and backgrounds.
• Strong working knowledge of personal computers with formal training and/or extensive employment experience preferred. The position requires high proficiency in open-source scientific computing environments such as Python and Github; Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint; electronic citation/reference managers; Adobe Acrobat; and using the internet.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with or record of scientific publishing.
• Experience with open-source machine learning frameworks such as Tensorflow and/or PyTorch.
• Experience with developing and documenting open-source software.
• Experience with cloud computing is highly desirable.
