About the Job
This is an advanced level technical work supporting engineers in functional areas of structure and roadway construction inspection, materials sampling, inspection and testing. Work usually involves a fairly wide range of decision making and use of judgment and may include providing work direction to others.
The CEI Sr. Inspector will function as lead project inspector conducting independent complex inspections and supervising lower-level inspectors performing routine to moderately complex inspections of roadway and structure construction processes and materials to assure compliance with the construction contract. The CEI Sr. Inspector may perform contract administrative duties such as field measurements of pay items as well as other Department required documentation. Work may include participating in Concept Meetings, Field Plan Reviews (Preliminary and/or Final), CPM schedule reviews, project close-out, and other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
The CEI Sr. Inspector may be responsible for the administration, inspection, and management of local let projects once assigned to Construction. Attend associated meetings relating to the administration of the Project. Ensure local municipalities follow LAP process to effectively close out Project upon completion. Verifies that invoiced work is satisfactory. Ensures that funds estimated for each phase are allocated appropriately.
Working under the supervision of the Project Administrator, prepare and check engineering computations, inspect construction work, conduct field material sampling and testing, and coordinate the work of junior Inspectors.
- Thorough knowledge of GDOT specifications and standards, acceptable construction practices, materials, methods and equipment used in highway construction and engineering.
- Thorough knowledge of mathematical functions, including algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric calculations related to highway/transportation engineering.
- Ability to read and comprehend construction plans and all other documents associated with the project.
- Skill in the use of office equipment such as calculators and computers.
- Ability to read, interpret and explain such things as construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and inspection procedures
- Ability to take notes and prepare or review reports
- Good communicative ability and supervisory ability to coordinate the activities of lower-level employees and
- instruct them in proper work methods.
- Coordinate and manage the lower-level inspectors and verification testing
- Responsible for daily inspection efforts on multiple complex, large, and /or diverse projects to ensure contractor’s operations comply with project plans, specifications, and contract documents
- Monitor on-site construction activities; prepare daily and weekly reports on work accomplished by contractor and reviews periodical pay estimates with contractor for accuracy and track quantities of completed work
- Prepare sketches and assemble data for Project Administrator to utilize when making changes to the project
- Perform field inspection of contractors’ operations to confirm compliance with contract documents; prepare inspection reports
- Prepare Daily Reports in Site Manager software as well as any other client required documentation
- Perform field sampling and testing of component materials and completed work in accordance with the construction contract and client’s scope of services (plans, specifications, and special provisions)
- Inspect traffic control devices and report deficiencies to ensure compliance with standards
- Maintain detailed accurate records of daily operations and significant events
- Participate in the development of job safety practices and observe general job safety practices
- Monitor and inspect the Work Zone Traffic Control (in accordance with the client’s requirements)
- Available to work daytime, nighttime, and/or weekend shifts as required
- Adhere to company marketing requirements by providing timely resume updates and participating in marketing campaigns
- Ensure timely completion of time sheets and expense reports

COMPETENCIES
- Possesses excellent analytical, technical, and communication skills
- Demonstrated proficiency in the full suite of Microsoft Office programs and Adobe Acrobat
- Able to read, interpret and explain construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and inspection procedures
- Possess highest level of technical expertise; capable of addressing the most difficult and novel issues/problems
- Maintains a positive attitude and collaborative spirit
- High school graduate or equivalent plus six (6) years of experience in construction inspection, three (3) years of which shall have been in bridge and/or roadway construction inspection or a Civil Engineering or Construction Management degree and two (2) year of road & bridge CEI experience
- Valid Driver’s License and a clear driving record
- Must have, or be able to earn within 6 months, the following qualifications:
- GDOT Field Concrete Technician
- GDOT WECS
- GSWCC Level 1a (Erosion Control)
- ATSSA Advanced Traffic Control
- Nuclear Radiation Safety Certificate
- Passing scores on GDOT’s Construction Engineering Inspection Training tests – Group 1 (General Provisions, Auxiliary Items, Basic Highway Math, and Basic Highway Plan Reading)
- Passing scores on GDOT’s Construction Engineering Inspection Training tests – Group 2 (Pavements, Bases and Subbases, Minor Drainage Structures, Construction Erosion Control)
- Passing scores on GDOT’s Construction Engineering Inspection Training tests – Group 3 (Earthwork, Bridges, Incidental Items)
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or Civil Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited university may be substituted for experience
- EIT License
