Job Summary:
The Endoscopy Technician, under the general supervision of a Registered Nurse, assists physicians or other providers with procedures performed in the gastroenterology and pulmonary endoscopy setting. This position functions as the technical expert, assisting in the performance of the most advanced procedures.
This position is the expert resource in the use and maintenance of the highly complex endoscopic equipment and instrumentation used in gastroenterology and pulmonary specialties.
Responsibilities:
Clinical Practice and Quality of Care
- .Performs and serves as a technical expert in the area of advanced Endoscopic procedures.
- Provides expert assistance to the endoscopist, demonstrating understanding of the patient’s anatomy and abnormalities which could affect the procedure.
- Recognizes emergent situations during endoscopy procedures and demonstrates the ability to set priorities to assist the endoscopy team.
- Demonstrates knowledge and proper handling of specialty equipment and accessories.
- Assists with the collection of specimens and prepares specimens for cytology, microbiology and pathology.
- Completes quality checks to ensure images were successfully transferred.
- Demonstrates knowledge and purpose of contrast media used during ERCP. Recognizes pertinent patient information modifying standard approach to care if patient has a contrast allergy.
- Facilitates proper patient positioning prior to endoscopic procedures and recognizes weight limitations for fluoroscopy table.
- Understands theory and safety when using cautery modalities including monopolar, bipolar and argon plasma coagulation and their various probes.
- Perform procedures in OR setting or at patient bedside including ICU, ED or Radiology.
- Assist with therapeutic interventions such as balloon dilation’s, polypectomy, sphincterotomy, stent placement, endostich and gastrostomy tube placement.
- Remains current on advanced procedures and new equipment.
- Seeks out learning experiences to maintain competency in the area of endoscopy and shares knowledge through continuing education.
- Demonstrates recognition of patient’s emotional and physical needs and the ability to provide a supportive environment.

- Understands that the stress of illness may alter patient behavior and the ability to follow through on the plan of health care; interacts respectfully in all situations including those where the patient and/or family display anger or distress.
- Facilitates teamwork by willingly assisting other team members in such activities as room cleaning, turnovers, procedure set-ups, patient transport and instrument cleaning
- Demonstrates initiative in carrying out projects independently.
- Coordinates review of special order supply inventory.
- Facilitates new specialty supply considerations with physicians, nurse manager, surgical materials coordinator and manufacturing representatives.
- Troubleshooting resource in the department for use of equipment.
- Identifies and reports defective equipment and supplies to the biomed, surgical materials coordinator or to the nurse manager.
- Monitors contrast inventory and completes monthly unit stock inspections and enters findings into pharmacy database.

Qualifications/Requirements:
Experience: 1 year in role experience, preferred.
Education: High School diploma or equivalent, required.
Licenses / Certifications: Completion of the SGNA certification within 6 months of accepting the position, required.
