Summary of Essential Functions
- Prepares slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination by a pathologist.
Educational Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Licenses and Certifications
- Certification as a Histologic technician (ASCP or equivalent) OR registry eligible with certification obtained within 1 year of hire date.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Minimum of two years of full-time experience in histopathology within the last ten years under the supervision of a pathologist.
- Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.
- Generalizing, evaluations, or decisions based on sensory or judgmental criteria.
- Must function in situations requiring precise attainment of set limits, tolerance, or standard.
Physical Requirements
- Bending, walking, standing, and lifting of up to 35 lbs.
- Manual dexterity, visual acuity, and color vision.
- Must be able to handle all types of biological and physical specimens using proper blood and body fluid precautions.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Devises and directs use of special stains and methods for isolating, identifying, and studying function, morphology, and pathology of obscure or difficult to identify cells tissues, and connective fibers. Performs all testing skillfully and accurately using approved methodologies and techniques, and in compliance with laboratory policies.
- Ensures proper identity of patient specimens through all phases of specimen processing.
- Ensures that slides are submitted to the pathologist within acceptable time frames.
- Assists pathologist with frozen sections, fine needle aspirations, and autopsies.
- Performs, records and monitors quality control procedures according to the specifications and time schedules for the section and documents all corrective actions taken.
- Performs and documents routine and complex preventive maintenance on equipment as designated according to specified procedures and time frames and keeps equipment clean and in good working order.
- Demonstrates the ability to timely assess and appropriately solve problems.
- Duties include but are not limited to timely ordering & putting away supplies. Accurate preparation of reagents and controls.
- Maintains section procedure manuals. Assists with training of personnel. Performs special assignments when requested by supervisory personnel.
- Demonstrates and ensures safe infection control procedures according to laboratory and hospital procedures and policies.
- Performs all other tasks/responsibilities, as necessary.
