Tidewater Physicians for Women is a division of Mid-Atlantic Women’s Care with offices in Virginia Beach and Norfolk, Virginia. Women of all ages from young teens to women past menopause, can access compassionate and individualized care at Tidewater Physicians for Women. Our practice takes comprehensive care to a higher level with a large team of experienced and qualified physicians, nurse practitioners, and two licensed counselors. Schedule:
- Monday - Friday.
- 8-hour shift.
The Medical Assistant is responsible for providing professional medical care for patients under the physician's supervision or nurse practitioner. The MA will assist providers and staff in coordinating patient care and functions as the primary liaison between patients, staff, and providers. The ability to maintain confidentiality concerning patients, co-workers, and all job assignments is imperative.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned which may include: Checking daily schedules and organizing patient flow in a timely manner within a fast-paced environment; accompanying patients to exam/procedure room; assisting patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collection of specimens, preparing for exam, etc.; collecting patient history; performing screening per provider guidelines; assisting physicians/nurses with various procedures; charting within electronic medical record system; relaying instructions to patient/families.
- Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include obtaining lab/mammogram reports, hospital notes, etc; completing forms/requisitions as needed, fulfilling all personal and role tasks assigned in the medical records system, completing lab orders/requisitions, including proper labeling and storage of specimens; mails normal result letters to patients as instructed by providers, follow up on past due lab lists within EMR, conducts post-op calls on behalf of physicians.
- Answers/ places calls to patients regarding recalls in a friendly and professional manner. Ensures that emergency or urgent calls are handed over to a nurse as per practice policy.
- Follows infection control and OSHA guidelines, including, but not be limited to the following: wearing of PPE, correct disposal of sharps and biohazardous material, preparing for procedures, according to the departmental protocol; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits; maintaining accurate equipment calibration records, and infection control records.
- Participates in clinical quality improvement activities as directed. Compliance with National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) structure and standards, American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecology (ACOG) Standards requirements, American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), and any other practice accreditation standards as directed.
- Follows all practice policies with regard to clinical quality and patient safety.
- Fulfills organizational responsibilities as assigned which may include: respecting/promoting patient rights; responding appropriately to emergency codes; sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisors quickly.
- Respects patient confidentiality at all times in all duties, in accordance with HIPPA legislation and practice policy.
- Places return calls as requested.
- Assists other personnel as directed by supervisor.
- Assists with ordering, sorting, stocking, and storage of supplies.
The job holder must demonstrate current competencies applicable to job position.
EDUCATION:
High school diploma, some college preferred. Course in medical assisting with medical assistant certification.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of two years experience as a medical assistant, preferably ob/gyn related.
REQUIREMENTS:
Maintains CPR certification.
KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of the healthcare field and medical specialty.
- Knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to a particular medical specialty.
- Knowledge of customer service principles and techniques.
- Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
- Knowledge of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
- Knowledge of electronic medical records systems.
- Knowledge of Windows, and internet environment.
SKILLS:
- Skill in screening and directing patients in a pleasant and expeditious manner.
- Exceptional customer service and phone etiquette.
- Skill in customer service by pleasantly dealing with all patients and effectively serving as a practice liaison.
- The ability to work effectively with minimal supervision and initiative in problem-solving.
- Ability to maintain effective and organized systems in ensuring timely patient flow in and out of examination rooms.
- Ability to perform phlebotomy and administer injections.
ABILITIES:
- Ability to speak clearly and concisely.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, physicians, employees, and the public.
- Ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Ability to type a minimum of 35 wpm.
- Ability to function as a member of the clinical team.
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in a combination of medical office and exam procedure room settings. Minimal exposure to communicable diseases. Fast-paced and stressful work environment at times.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics techniques when making necessary patient transfers and helping patients with walking, dressing, etc. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds of supplies.
Salary: From $16.00 per hour based upon OB/GYN experience.
