Job Description:
The Medical Assistant in Oncology provides essential clinical and administrative support to the healthcare team. This role involves a combination of patient care, medical procedures, and administrative tasks, all performed within the specialized context of Hematology and Oncology.
Responsibilities:
Clinical Duties:
Patient Preparation:
- Prepare examination rooms for patient visits, ensuring necessary equipment and supplies are readily available
- Assist patients in disrobing and draping appropriately for examinations
- Obtain and record vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, height & weight) accurately
- Record patient intake (past medical history, family & social history, surgical history, medication list, allergies, other problems and screening questions as set by provider)
Phlebotomy and Specimen Collection:??????
- Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture to collect blood samples for lab testing
- Collect and process other specimens, such as urine, stool, and bone marrow samples
- Ensure proper labeling and handling of specimens
Basic Diagnostic Procedures:
- Assist with electrocardiograms (ECGs), spirometry, and other diagnostic tests
- Prepare patients for and assist with bone marrow biopsies and lumbar punctures
Administrative Duties:
Patient Scheduling:
- Schedule patient appointments, including coordinating with other healthcare providers
- Manage patient flow and ensure timely appointments
- Reschedule appointments as needed
Medical Records:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient medical records
- Prepare and file patient charts
- Enter patient data into electronic health records (EHR)
Insurance Verification:
- Verify patient insurance eligibility and benefits
- Obtain pre-authorization for treatments and procedures
- Coordinate with insurance companies for billing and reimbursement
Inventory Management:
- Maintain adequate levels of medical supplies and equipment
- Order and restock supplies as needed
- Prepare and sterilize medical instruments
Requirements:
- Minimum 2 years experience as Medical Assistant in health related field, oncology preferred
- Medical Office Assistant certification required
- High School diploma or Equivalency required
- Working knowledge of MediSoft and PowerMed computer applications
