NEEDED: Certified Nursing Assistant
LOCATION: 1299 S. Seaside Avenue, Terminal Island, CA, 90731
SCHEDULE: Monday through Sunday, normally between the hours of 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Monday through Sunday between the hours of 10:00 p.m. to 6:30a.m., including holidays with a 30-minute unpaid lunch period. Schedule shall not exceed 40 hours per week.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- US CITIZEN
- Shall possess specialty training from an approved accredited Medical Nursing Assistant Program. A certification of completion is strongly recommended.
- Shall be certified in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
- Must have working knowledge of Automatic External Defibrillator principles, techniques and will initiate Basic Life Support during medical emergencies
- Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience providing certified nursing assistant services.
- Bilingual oral communication skills and experience in a clinical setting are desirable.
- Duties include but not limited to obtaining vital sign, assisting in wound care, admitting patients into Short Stay Unit (SSU) room, discharging inmate from the SSU, assisting patient with their daily activities, and assisting ambulation, transfer from bed to chair and assist during emergencies in SSU.
- Perform Phlebotomy Services in the Short Stay Unit (SSU).
- Assist in restocking of supplies and notify the nurses of out-of-stock supplies.
- Will complete all logbooks and equipment, conduct inventory and scanning patient record into the Bureau Electronic Medical Records System (BEMR).
- Assist in housekeeping responsibilities and other assigned duties as required.
- Will be responsible for the safety of the Health Services Unit as well as the safety of the institution by securing all keys, doors, gates and patients in the SSU.
- Responsible for providing bedside care and assistance with the activities of daily living.
- Performs delegated tasks of patient care under the guidance of a Registered Nurse (RNs).
- Carries out designated skills, which are within those functions limited by unlicensed nursing personnel.
- Receives primary direction and is responsible to a Clinical Nurse Supervisor or to a nurse on duty.
- Works closely in assisting the clinical staff in the delivery of nursing care in the in-patient Short Stay Unit.
- Works closely with the health care practitioners, Correctional Services, and other intuitional departments in the delivery of healthcare at FCI Terminal Island, in-patient Short Stay Unit.
- Performs duties in collaboration with members of a multidisciplinary team.
DUTIES:
All duties of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) will perform in accordance with standards and methods generally accepted within the field of Certified Nursing Assistant, and compliance with the Federal and State policy and regulations.
The services to be provided are professional in nature and will be commensurate with the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) standards of care.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist the Registered Nurse in performing patient care activities for medical/surgical inmates admitted to the in-patient Short Stay Unit. These services include bedside care and assisting patients with activities of daily living.
- The Certified Nursing Assistant delivers these services under the guidance of a Registered Nurse.
- The CNA is required to rotate with other CNAs in assignments and will be assigned to work any shift within a 24-hour period to include weekends and holidays, based upon the needs of the in-patient Short Stay Unit.
- Utilize good body mechanics when transferring and/or assisting patients.
- Assist the RN with patients as needed, will assist with respiratory care (coughing, deep breathing, etc.), assist with meals, oral fluids, and intake and output records, applies hot and cold treatments as directed and assist with ambulation and transfer as needed.
- Must have knowledge of medical and nursing terminology.
- Must have skills in identification of narcotics, narcotic paraphernalia, contraband, control of needles and syringes and control or accountable medical supplies.
- Observe drainage and empties, measures, and records output as delegated, assist with admissions and discharges and performs designated tasks for isolating patient (airborne and contact precaution) and assists with all medical emergencies during morning shift.
- Will report pertinent data in a timely manner to the Medical Staff or to the RN including changes in patient’s condition requiring assessment and/or further intervention, will communicates any changes in behavior, vital signs, or significant incidents to the nurse or to the Supervisory Clinical Nurse.
- Will follow guidelines, which require confidentiality with all patient information.
- Prepare patient care area by restocking equipment and supplies needed by physicians or nurses performing treatments or exams, will assist with cleaning of medical and patient care equipment as directed.
- Communicate and interact frequently with adult psychiatric and medical/surgical inmates will remind inmates of callouts and assist in the transportation of inmates to callouts.
- Will practice basic communication technique with staff and patients; will have knowledge of aged-specific care needs for geriatric patients; must recognize indications of potential suicidal patients.
- Assist in monitoring patients on out counts, suicide watch, or other observation status as delegated by the nurse on duty or by the Supervisory Clinical Nurse.
- Perform other duties as directed, including but not limited to filling and/or scanning medical documents into patient electronic medical record (BEMR) and stamping chart forms, etc.
- Check patient vital signs and weight and documents this data and pertinent observations in the patient’s BEMR, will place armbands on patients and monitor compliance, will chart patient care given and other data in the patient’s BEMR.
- Maintains sanitation of patient care areas and observe infection control procedures and universal precautions in all instances.
- Assist physicians and nurses with exam or treatment dealing with patient care, including turning and positioning of patients, draping, and use of safety restraints (e.g., safety straps, side rails) as necessary.
- Will assist with dressing changes and remove dressings at the direction of the physician.
- Responsible for all other duties and tasks assigned by duty nurses and will respond to tasks assigned by the Clinical Supervisor and evening and morning duty nurse.
- Procure proper equipment needed, maintain clean and sterile fields, secure specimens for laboratory analysis, (i.e., urine, stool, sputum, etc.), labels specimens, and transports them to transporittory.
- Assist the Supervisory Clinical Nurse in the maintenance of equipment and supplies and notify him/her when supplies are needed.
