SUMMARY: The Compounding Pharmacy Technician is responsible for creating compounded medications, receiving medication orders, measuring quantities of mixing ingredients and packaging medication. Specialty Veterinary Pharmacy (SVPMEDS) team members focus in four essential areas known as “C.A.T.S.”: Compliance, Affordability, Turnaround, and Service. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensures the privacy and confidentiality of Personal Health Information (PHI) as required by HIPAA.
- Maintains a safe, clean and organized lab floor complying with procedures, rules and regulations.
- Makes sure the quality and control of all prescriptions filled in the pull station are accurate, uniform in appearance and follow state and federal law.
- Weighs, measures and mixes raw material ingredients, monitors agitation, heating and cooling temperatures, and other parameters to ensure finished batches of creams, gels, capsules and liquids meet specifications.
- Prepares labels and packages prepackaged and unit dose drugs in accordance with the dispensing order.
- Prepares and generates batch for preparation of non-sterile compounding dilution and mixtures.
- Transfers materials into properly labeled, safety approved containers.
- Restocks shelves in the unit dose fill and front counter areas.
- Cleans and sanitizes equipment and completes all required documentation to maintain compliance with USP 795 (non-sterile compounding) and company Quality System.
- Completes monthly outdated check and cleaning as assigned by Supervisor.
- Performs bulk compounding of pharmaceuticals from a formula, under the supervision of a Pharmacist.
- Complies with all state and federal laws, rules, and regulations governing the practice of pharmacy.
- Ensures cleansing and garbing policy is performed for non-sterile compounding.
- Compound all required non-sterile preparations including flavored chewables, oral liquids, transdermal gels, capsules and oral flavored powders in compliance with master formula worksheets.
- Performs computer entry of prescriptions and charge/credit data.
- Attends to clinical inquiries requiring a pharmacist’s professional judgment.
- Answers inquiries not requiring a pharmacist’s professional judgment.
- Is knowledgeable and follows all Pharmacy Department policies and standard operating procedures.
- Handles and prepares hazardous drugs in accordance with Regulations.
- Assists other departments as needed in various capacities.
- Ensures and maintains work flow completion on time sensitive prescription orders.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or one to two years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certificates, licenses and registrations required:
- Texas Registered Pharmacy Technician license
- PTCB Certification
- Computer skills required: Human Resource Systems; Inventory Software; Microsoft Office Suite; Payroll Systems
- Other skills required:
- Technicians must complete a minimum of twenty (20) hours of continuing education (CE) during each two (2) year re-certification cycle
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment, following specific instructions or procedures
- A disciplined mindset, with great attention to detail, and a near-obsession with accuracy and precision, especially with regard to measuring, pouring and mixing

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Continually required to stand, walk, utilize hand and finger dexterity
- Frequently required to talk or hear, climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel or crawl
- Frequently works near moving mechanical parts
- Occasionally works in high, precarious places, around fumes, airborne particles, or toxic chemicals
- While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
- The employee must occasionally lift and /or move more than 20 pounds

- Specialized equipment, machines, or vehicles used:
- Operate compounding equipment such as capsules machine, tablet machine, Exakt Ointment Mill, Overhead Stirrer, Digital Scales.
