POSITION SUMMARY:
As a member of the surgical team, the surgical technician provides patient care during surgical procedures by providing an aseptic and safe environment. Duties include prepping and sterilizing rooms, transporting patients, passing instruments and providing assistance to surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and other staff during surgery. Uses technical and aseptic techniques to ensure methodology is in compliance with established sterile standards and procedures.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:
- Checks supplies/instrumentation and equipment needed for surgical procedures and ensures they are working properly. Opens sterile supplies and sets up the table for each surgical procedure. Directly assists the surgical team during surgical procedures, passing instruments and supplies as needed. Accountable for proper surgical instrument preparation, function, storage, and repair. Demonstrates knowledge of the function/use of sterilization equipment. Completes sterilization logs; processes and records the results of biological indicators; can verbalize importance of documentation accuracy. Handles, labels, and transports specimens properly.
- Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided.
- Utilizes hospital's behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to support the department's and the hospital's goals.
- Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
- Performs other duties as needed
- Adheres to all of BMC's RESPECT behavioral standards.
EDUCATION:
- Requires high school diploma or equivalent
- Must also be a graduate of an accredited/approved program in surgical technology (or completed an Armed Forces medic or corpsmen program)
EXPERIENCE:
- Previous surgical tech experience preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
- Surgical Technician certification required
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Previous surgical tech experience preferred.
- Ability to effectively speak read and write English
- Ability to accurately interpret and use medical terminology and abbreviations
- Computer proficiency to access and enter computerized data/information.
- Effective interpersonal skills to interact appropriately with patients, families, physicians and other hospital staff.
- Organizational skills to effectively set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
