The Advanced Emissions team within Vehicle Propulsion Systems Engineering is seeking a Chemist / Chemical Engineer with a strong background is chemistry and understanding of catalyst function and durability for exhaust gas treatment of internal combustion engines. Working to evaluate and investigate aftertreatment technologies in the laboratory environment at Ford Research & Innovation Center and on vehicle at Allen Park Test Laboratory to improve emission control for increasing stringent standards.
What you'll do...
- Characterization of materials for catalyst substrates, particle filters, and exhaust assemblies, including SEM, CTE, shear strength, porosimetry, XRF, XRD and BET.
- Performing catalytic activity evaluation of monolithic samples and/or full size aftertreatment systems.
- Benchmarking supplier formulations for catalyst robustness and durability.
- Collaborate with aftertreatment test engineers, technical specialists and catalyst coaters and substrate suppliers on new concepts for aftertreatment.
- Collaborate with calibration teams, suppliers, and technical specialists to support root cause determination and prevent reoccurrence for warranty emission issues or post-production in-use concerns (e.g., IUVP/IUCP).
- General work to assemble and maintain reactor and catalyst assemblies for testing and demonstration of function.
- Validation of laboratory results on vehicle applications by dyno/ chassis rolls testing for emission demonstration and analysis of on-vehicle function.
- Analysis of vehicle emissions data to quantify sensitivity of tailpipe emissions to aftertreatment design parameters and operational noise factors.
Skills Required:
- Understanding of catalyst function, failure modes, and sensitivity to inputs and noise factors.
- Experience with chassis or engine dynamometer facilities and an understanding of their operations with respect to vehicle drive cycles, emission reports, and data collection using ATI Vision/ETAS.
- Sound technical knowledge of regulated emission requirements.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
Skills Preferred:
- Familiarity with programming software including LabVIEW and MATLAB.
- Familiarity with emission measurement techniques including FID, FTIR, mass spectrometry, and x-ray analysis.
Experience Required:
- 5 – 10 years of experience in the combustion engine emissions field
Experience Preferred:
- 5+ years demonstrating ability to analyze, plan, and solve sophisticated system problems as they relate to engines and emissions.
Education Required:
- Minimum B.S. in Physical Sciences or Engineering (Chemistry, Physics, or Chemical Engineering).
Additional Information:
- The catalyst experience we are looking for has to do with the chemical analysis of the exhaust gases.
- We like to see that they have worked in a lab testing catalysis on synthetic gas benches and reactors.
Candidates must have the following experience:
- Understanding of catalyst function, failure modes, and sensitivity to inputs and noise factors.
