ROLE OVERVIEW:
Adhesive R&D & Production Chemist (III) supporting Greif’s adhesive operations and its various customers in North America by invention, innovation, safety, profitability, customer service excellence and quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop chemistry and engineering solutions for Greif’s Cincinnati Adhesives plant and its other divisions, working directly with various R&D, OPEX and production teams.
- As an accomplished professional chemist, this candidate is considered a general scientific officer for Greif, contributing expertise to Greif’s global network.
- Remain work steady. Working beyond at-hand projects and exercising your creativity to pursue company success in team projects and your own inventions.
- Guide engineering teams to build/implement new mixing systems for R&D small batching, scale-up and production batching for water based adhesives and coatings.
- Designing and building/implementing solvent based coatings systems.
- Utilizing business software: Coupa, LN SBP and XM Management.
- Traveling independently and working on site with other adhesive plants, customers and sister plants within North America, as needed.
- Remain adaptable and professional in a high-paced manufacturing environment.
- Employ proper formulation methods for the development of water-based paper adhesives. Chemistry is primarily PVAc, PVOH, VAE, Dextrin/Starches, PSAs
- Maintain and update R&D equipment as needed and establish and maintain SOPs
- Organizing and maintaining cleanliness in lab and production areas, samples, and stations.
- Prepare and share reports with various business partners and elite management, internally and in the trade market.
- Coordinate agencies and participate in external and internal quality audits.Drive regular communication with your team to create organizational awareness and transparency through good chemistry practice.
- Deliver result-driven bi-weekly reports and communicate with customers on testing and troubleshooting.
- Work directly with chemical vendors, machine shops and engineering teams.
- Travel as needed, up to approx. 50% for onsite trials and customer requests.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, Engineering or Chemistry. A combination of education, laboratory, and manufacturing experience will be considered in some cases.
- Minimum 10 years of related experience in manufacturing sciences of adhesives.
Knowledge and Skills
- Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Teams. Emphasis on Excel knowledge)
- High aptitude in MS Excel
- Keep Safety and Safe Practices as your primary goal
- Experience in mixing vessels and industrial compounding.
- Experience with packaging adhesive formulation, more specifically water based emulsions and solutions
- Experience with industrial processing of liquid adhesives
- Emulsion Polymerization is a plus
