About the Job
The Chief Estimator responsibilities:
- Provide leadership to the Estimating department, to include mentoring all levels of estimators, provide training and strategically chosen growth opportunities/assignments, and coordinate efforts with Estimating, Business Development, Marketing, and Operations.
- Manage the preparation of detailed budget estimates (i.e. conceptual, schematic, design development, and construction documents). This includes supporting the preparation and analysis of cost models for the various phases of project design and completion.
- Lead pursuits on complex packages or actively participate in estimates, as workload demands. Assign scopes of work, direct and review scope assignments, and ensure accuracy and completeness of estimates. Lead the WCG team in pursuit strategy, pre-bid meetings, site visits (as necessary), and interviews/meetings as required.
- Review and approve project quotes as necessary for the entire Estimating & Preconstruction Department. This includes reviewing and confirming quotes for materials, labor, equipment, data, and environmental factors.
- Understand the different levels of construction design and effectively hold designers and business partners to the right standards during the appropriate phases of the preconstruction process.
- Continuously build and improve working relationships with WCG employees, project owners, architects, engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors. Responsible for ensuring best practices are followed, high quality and consistent services are delivered, and an exemplary customer service experience is provided by each project team member.
- Provide guidance and assistance to the Marketing department for proposals, presentations, and brochure materials. Review proposal specifications, drawings, attend meetings with A/E, owners to determine the scope of work and required contents of conceptual estimate. Provide conceptual and final estimating and scheduling input on assigned projects.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives to develop pursuit strategies, trade partner relationships, cost analysis, and standard operating procedures for the Estimating department.
- Responsible for daily reporting of new projects, concerns, and achievements to the President and other members of the Executive Team as necessary. This includes conferring with supervisory personnel, employees, owners, contractors, and/or design professionals to discuss and resolve matters related to cost changes and specification adjustments.
- Other duties as assigned.
Candidate Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or closely related discipline and 10 years of construction experience for a General Contractor or 15+ years of experience in construction estimating for a General Contractor without a degree.
- Experience in commercial construction estimating and preconstruction (ground up and TI) for job sizes up to $40M
- Must be familiar with and be willing to use project management control systems (e.g. scheduling, estimating, cost control, procurement, and business development).
- Must be computer literate and proficient in MS Office skills including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook.
- Experience with Sage estimating software is preferred.
- Possess strong communication and sales skills to secure a client agreement and/or service.
- Experienced in construction layout, blueprint, and shop drawing readings.
- Exhibits consistent and competent judgement. This includes being able to address difficult issues with problem-solving techniques and solutions.
- Ability to analyze and interpret financial data which requires strong mathematical reasoning and quantitative skills.
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written). Must be able to present a credible, confident, positive image of oneself and the company during oral presentations to clients, designers, and others.
- Must possess technical understandings of architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing disciplines.
- Ability to consistently deliver accurate and thorough estimates while setting realistic expectations of the company's ability to deliver construction services.
- Demonstrated experience delivering pre-planning and conceptual estimates as well as accurately and thoroughly forecasting costs.
- Proven ability to compile, review, analyze, and quote project costs while effectively managing the full cycle bid process.
- Excellent time management, problem solving, decision making, human relations, presentation, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines.
- Understand and respect the importance of confidentiality.
- Possess the passion for construction necessary to generate a consistent positive work environment and foster collaborative teams with varying styles and backgrounds.
- Must be an innovative problem solver with the ability to generate new ideas, challenge the status quo, and lead in the direction necessary to capitalize on old and new opportunities.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Must be eligible to work in the US without sponsorship.
- Relationships with our Trade Partners are important, local candidates with established relationships are strongly preferred.
