We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO/Lead Accountant) to join our executive team and help us drive our accounting practices, financial reporting and fiscal strategy in alignment with our mission.
Position Overview:
The CFO/Lead Accountant will report directly to the Executive Director and Board of Directors, responsible for overseeing all financial aspects of the organization. This role demands a strong leader with deep experience in both accounting and financial management, particularly in the non-profit and affordable housing sectors. The CFO/Lead Accountant will manage a team and ensure the financial health and sustainability of the organization through sound fiscal planning, budgeting, and reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Leadership:
- Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with the organization's mission and goals.
- Assist in preparation of and provide financial oversight and leadership, ensuring the integrity and accuracy of financial information.
- Work closely with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and senior leadership to inform and drive accounting, financial and strategic fiscal decisions.
- Budgeting & Forecasting:
- Lead the annual budgeting process in cooperation with the Chief Operating Officer and Regional Property Managers, including long-term financial planning and forecasting.
- Monitor and report on financial performance against budgets, identifying areas for improvement.
- Financial Reporting & Compliance:
- Prepare and ensure timely and accurate financial reporting to internal partners such as Chief Operating Officer and Regional Property Managers, as well as the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and external stakeholders.
- Oversee audits, tax filings, and compliance with all applicable financial regulations and requirements.
- Maintain and update financial policies and procedures to ensure strong internal controls.
- Investment & Risk Management:
- Oversee the organization’s investment portfolio, ensuring alignment with financial goals and risk tolerance.
- Assess and manage financial risks, including insurance coverage, to protect the organization’s assets.
- Team Management:
- Lead, mentor, and develop a finance team capable of supporting the organization’s operations, growth and complexity.
- Foster a collaborative and mission-driven culture within the finance department.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; Certified Public Accountant preferred, however a Master of Science in Finance or Master of Business Administration will be considered with appropriate experience.
- 5+ years of senior accounting/financial leadership experience, preferably within the non-profit or affordable housing sector.
- Proven experience in strategic financial planning, budgeting, accounting and reporting.
- In-depth knowledge of non-profit environment, including fund accounting, compliance, and reporting requirements.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate complex financial concepts to diverse stakeholders.
