What You Will Do:The Chief Medical Officer develops strategies to align with the mission, vision and values of Ascension. Provides oversight for medical and clinical areas to ensure achievement of goals for the department(s). The position involves both operational and clinical oversight responsibilities and works closely with the faculty and leadership in the accomplishment of these responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
- Acts as an advocate on behalf of our patients, physicians and clinical staff.
- Builds and cultivates strong physician relations within all of Ascension’s operating entities.
- Identifies, cultivates and develops emerging physician leaders, provides coaching and mentoring by identifying deficits and needs for physician leadership training and opportunity.

Growth and Strategic Planning - Oversees the development and continuous improvement of services, policies, processes, and programs, including medical practice review, governance, credentialing, privileging, peer review, medical information systems, and telemedicine opportunities.
- Prioritizes and develop clinical quality improvement processes plans and engages medical staff in process improvement
- Promotes evidenced-based medicine by actively promoting the delivery of care services that are based on best clinical practice guidelines
- Promotes patient centered care, ensures that decisions respect patients’ wants, needs, and preferences, and that patients have the education and support they need to make decisions and participate in their own care.
- Creates a culture of engagement and alignment between the medical staff and the organizational strategic vision and goals.
- Partner with the Chief Medical Informatics Officer to ensure that data and metrics are accurate, current, well-defined and relevant.
- If the organization has a chief medical informatics officer (CMIO), the two must work together to institute electronic medical records (EMR) and computerized physician order entry (CPOE) systems that actually work, are user-friendly, and facilitate meaningful communication of medical information.
- Formulates and implements operational strategies and initiatives, including patient safety, performance improvement and physician recruitment.
- Champions transparent performance improvement metrics in building a partnership between the medical staff and Nursing and Case Management.
- Establishes strong relationships with community and business leaders as well as state and local government officials
- Oversee operations, budget, financial targets, and human resources management.
- Partners with service line leaders by evaluating new clinical business line opportunities that align with the strategic vision, by actively engaging in strategic planning for service line business plan development. Monitors market trends, market share data and physician practices to look for opportunities for business growth. Implements new clinical initiatives and business plans as directed as the executive lead.
- Directs and oversees the process for counseling and managing issues of physician professional conduct. Ensures adherence and completion of medical staff decisions regarding peer review and physician behavioral issues.
- Provides consultative support to graduate and under-graduate medical education programs, if applicable.
- Facilitates GME activities on hospital campus by ensuring hospital compliance and readiness for Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) visits by the ACGME.
- Works collaboratively with other staff to provide necessary clinical support services to facilities and medical staff. Assumes administrative leadership as mutually agreed.
- Ensures licensing and other governmental and regulatory requirements. Participates in surveys and inspections by accrediting/licensure bodies.
- Assists in investigating complaints, incidents, claims of malpractice and/or negligence on the art of hospital personnel and medical staff.
- Monitors major issues and trends in the practice of medicine and area of health policy advising medical staff and executive leadership in relation to organization activities.
- Serves as an advocate, intermediary and facilitator with external regulators for regulatory matters. Facilitates system training and implementation for physicians and assists in development of training modules and other EMR features.

What You Will Need:Licensure / Certification / Registration:
- Physician MD/DO credentialed from the Maryland Board of Physicians obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date required. Verified by local Credentialing Office
Education:
- Doctor of Medicine (MD), or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), required.
