The Chief of Diagnostic Medical Physics will provide leadership and expertise in diagnostic medical physics, overseeing the clinical, educational, and research activities of the medical physics program within the department. This position requires a highly skilled professional committed to advancing the field of medical physics through innovative practices, collaborative research, development of modality specialized physics support and mentorship of junior faculty and trainees. The new Chief will participate in the expansion of medical physics services to associated institutions.
Our physicists are active in supporting the clinical mission of the Department and they participate in the physics education of students and trainees. Dartmouth sponsors a CAMPEP-accredited Medical Physics Education program which is available to PhD students in engineering and the physical sciences. Though a separate group supporting a separate Department, there is a robust therapeutic medical physics program supporting Radiation Oncology; this group recently started a therapeutic Medical Physics residency program and would prove a wonderful resource for collaboration. We seek to build a diagnostic residency program hosted within the Department that will be undertaken by the new Chief.

The selected candidate will join Dartmouth Health’s Radiology Department which includes 60 radiologists, a large and robust team of technologists, nurses, and support staff, and a small team of highly valued medical physicists. We are an internationally-known Department with a deep history in the field, beginning with acquiring the first clinically acquired x-ray in the United States in 1896. While Dartmouth Health includes many hospitals and clinic sites, this position is based at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, our tertiary care central hub which also serves as the system’s Academic Medical Center. DHMC is the state’s only Level 1 trauma center, a certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, and is home to a fleet of helicopter and ground-based medical transport services.

Required Licensure/Certifications:
- PhD in Medical Physics, Physics, or a related field.
- Maintains relevant competency and qualifications to fully test screening and diagnostic mammography including stereotactic breast biopsy, fluoroscopy, CT, MRI, Breast MRI, ultrasound, breast ultrasound, SPECT and PET systems.
- Have certification as a Diagnostic Medical Physicist. Preference for certification as a Nuclear Medicine Medical Physicist as well, though such certification can be obtained after starting, provided the candidate is able to fully test SPECT and PET systems upon starting in the role.
