Chief Operating Officer
The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for assisting the credit union President/CEO in the overall management and direction of all credit union operations- which include planning, recommending, and implementing programs and policies. The COO will also be responsible for ensuring that the President/CEO is kept fully informed on the conditions and operations of the credit union and of all important factors influencing them. You will serve as steward of our brand and take responsibility for member experience across all channels, while being a key influencer of strategy and performance.
This role is dynamic and multifaceted; it requires a strong communicator who can manage multiple projects with competing priorities. We’ll rely on you to help find creative solutions to solve tough challenges, and to stay ahead of trends in the financial industry. You will serve as a vital member of the leadership team providing energy, creativity, and meaningful insights to help drive strategic business decisions as well as lead strategic projects.

Direct Responsible areas include:
Strategy
- Act as a key advisor to Chief Executive Officer and Board on critical changes in the competitive landscape, global marketplace and external business environment; Lead product design and development along with product evolution that enables the growth of the credit union; Continually assess and share new business model ideas, growth possibilities and digital technologies that can better meet member needs; Must be willing to take calculated risks and manage expectations of both internal development teams and external partnerships; Actively participates in the planning and implementation of the credit union’s strategic plan; Stay informed of trends and consumer needs well beyond financial services and help the credit union apply learning to enable growth and sustainability; Create a process to help leaders identify emerging trends or complex business opportunities into business cases that could lead to future strategies; Work with the CEO, 1DCU Board and other senior leaders to collaboratively write the overall strategic plan; C reate and align performance goals with overall organizational measures; Facilitate the execution of the strategy by working collaboratively with the other Executive Team members and ensuring that the strategy is communicated and easily understood by all throughout the organization; Ensure that strategic actions are completed at various levels to achieve desired results.
Lending
- Researching and evaluating the feasibility of new lending products. Remain cognizant of changes within the economic environment and the potential impact of these changes on member borrowing trends; Managing the credit union’s consumer, mortgage, and visa loan portfolios in support of the credit union’s goals and strategic direction; Leading the development of One Detroit Credit Union’s small business lending products; Ensuring all consumer and portfolio mortgage loans conform to internal documentation and servicing standards as well as all applicable lending laws and regulations; Ensuring that lending policies and procedures reflect external rules and regulations and are effectively communicated and implemented by all staff; Increasing the productivity and quality of loan originators by working with peers across business functions to improve internal processes; Developing and implementing initiatives to garner efficiencies throughout the lending and collection process.
Human Resources
- Oversee the Human Resources department’s strategic goals, planning, and overall performance; Provide a range of consultation services to leaders and teams on the development and implementation of key strategies and solutions to create and sustain a high performing organization; Navigate organizational challenges and brings critical stakeholders to consensus through successful facilitation of critical decision-making meetings; Provide coaching, team development, and organization development in consultation with other leaders to implement organization improvement initiatives and assure alignment with the organization’s strategic plans; Lead and continuously improves the onboarding and off-boarding of employees aligning with best practice while promoting business continuity and employee engagement; Support change initiatives while ensuring positive employee relationships; Implement processes and practices that support workforce diversity, a fair and just workplace and builds employee commitment; Champion culture and talent growth brand including engaging team members in understanding their accountability and role in retaining culture. Ensures HR processes are aligned with the culture beginning with the recruitment process through off boarding; Ensure practices are in compliance with regulatory standards and policies; Manage information flow and internal communications to support the smooth operation of the organization, consistent messages are delivered throughout the organization and that there is a shared understanding of strategy, role and required business outcomes.
Retail/Operations
- Work with the Director of Retail to oversee Branch, Digital and Contact Center sales and service to drive membership growth and ensure excellent member experience; Develop and execute strategies to promote a dynamic sales/service culture, revenue growth and optimization of overall profitability of branches; Ensure branch policies and procedures are adhered to and revised as needed based on business needs; Drive new business development efforts and maintain key relationships with community partners; Make staffing decisions on productions levels and present those findings when changes need to be made; Develop, maintain, and revise the incentive plan for the organization; Continually assessing efficiencies across all areas of the credit union.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
To be successful in this role, you’ll need to have a strong ability to motivate and influence team members across the credit union. You Have:
- 7-10 years’ experience in strategic planning and innovation including talent and HR leadership, product development, along with marketing and branding.
- 10 years’ experience in senior management or with managing managers.
- Must have exemplary presentation skills and be comfortable speaking on behalf of the credit union.
- Seasoned professional, with a strong strategic orientation, who has previously held several business and operational roles in fast-paced and complex environments. Work experience should include success in a period of growth and/or transition.
- Ability to apply a variety of strategic frameworks to analyze problems and to guide and develop solutions.
- Exceptional organizational development skills and coaching abilities that enable people leaders to grow and lead.
- Ability to translate and communicate complex topics in a variety of forums, tailoring communications to effectively fit and influence the targeted audience; strong executive presence, presentation and communication skills.
- Ability to lead the entire range of problem-solving work from problem definition to analysis, recommendation and the development of implementation plans.
- Ability to work collaboratively with key internal and external leaders, partners, suppliers and members.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and creativity.
- Master’s Degree or an equivalent combination of a Bachelor’s degree and experience.
- Proven track record with strategic planning, development, and execution.
BSA Requirements
This job requires and understanding of and compliance with the Bank Secrecy Act, OFAC, the USA PATRIOT Act, and related 1DCU policies and procedures, including the reporting of suspicious activity, including insider abuse, as directed. The role includes the management and support of subordinate team members’ responsibilities in these areas .
Supervisory Responsibility
This position is responsible for overseeing the retail, lending and human resources departments.
Work Environment
This job operates in a clerical office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Physical Demands
This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full time position. Hours worked may exceed 40 hours per week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Travel
This position may require occasional travel, up to 25%.
Required Education, Experience, & Skills
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 7 to 10 years of Executive level experience and/or training.
- Strong verbal, written, and analytical skills.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite applications.
Preferred Education Experience, & Skills
- Masters' degree or equivalent.
- 7 to 11 years of related experience at a financial institution.
