Position Summary:
The primary purpose of your job is to supervise and teach the group of children to which you are assigned. Current positions available: Full-Time M-F 2:00-6:30 (45 Hours/per pay period)
Essential Functions:
- Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
- Must be familiar with and follow the policies and procedures set forth in Wisconsin Licensing DCF 251 and that of Good Shepherd Services and Good Shepherd Children's Center.
- Shall be familiar with child abuse and neglect laws and will report any suspected abuse or neglect to the director and/or social services.
- Shall assist a teacher in planning and implementing daily, weekly and monthly lesson plans.
- Shall assist in organizing materials needed for daily activities and cleaning up after the completion of activities.
- Supervises, knows the names, whereabouts and number of children assigned to your care at all times. Does not allow children out-of licensed program area without appropriate adult supervision as per center policy and DCF 251.
- Intervenes when children are engaging in behaviors that could harm themselves, others or property using positive guidance techniques.
- Shall assist children with personal cleanliness, meal service and self-help skills.
- Ensures that all foods served at meals and snacks are age appropriate, to cut or mash foods to size to prevent choking hazards and monitor the temperature of food to prevent scalding.
- Shall be alert to children under your care who have allergies to foods or other substances. Shall know the actions to be taken in the event that a possible allergic reaction may occur. Is aware of any children under your care with special health needs and knows interventions or assistance needed to care for those children.

- Will properly and legibly fill out daily sheets for children in those classrooms where, a daily sheet in regards to the child's day is sent home with the family.
- Communicates effectively and professionally with parents/guardians, co-workers and community partners.
- Will greet families upon their arrival at the center.
- Will transition children from activity to activity so that they do not have to wait in large lines or for extended periods of time.
- Shall know the policies and procedures to follow in emergency situations and be capable of implementing those procedures.
- Will report any possible safety hazards to the Director/Administrator including, but not limited to broken or unsafe toys or equipment.
- Will be familiar with first aid procedures which can be implemented at the center and will be capable of performing those procedures. Shall be aware of the location of first aid and eye wash stations.
- Shall understand universal precautions and health policies and shall know the location of the MSDS manual and how to use it.
- Shall participate in organizational functions and trainings as assigned/interested.
- Shall assist in cleaning the center including, but not limited to: vacuuming carpets, sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning up spills, flooded toilets, cleaning up bodily substances that come in contact with floors, toys or equipment, dusting furniture, wiping up after meals or activities and keeping classrooms and the center clean, safe and dust free.
- Will administer medications or apply ointments to children upon request of the parent/guardian who have filled out a proper authorization form and document in the Medical/Accident Log as per center policy and DCF 251.
- Will fill out an Accident/Ouch Report as per policy as necessary and documents in the Medical/Accident Log as per center policy and DCF 251.
- Understands and utilizes proper diapering procedures and disinfection of changing tables.
- Staff working in infant and toddler rooms shall be aware of proper use and storage of formulas, breast milk and baby foods.
- Will be aware of all policies and procedures which are specific to the particular age group to which you are assigned.
- Will remain flexible to work with any age group where an assistant teacher is needed.
- Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult children.

Education:
Assistant teachers shall meet or exceed the educational requirements set forth in DCF 251. A person who is hired as an assistant teacher shall be qualified in one of the following ways:
- The person shall be at least eighteen(18) years old and have satisfactorily
completed one non-credit department approved course in early childhood education or completes that training within six (6) months after assuming the position.
or
- The person shall be at least eighteen (18) years old and have satisfactorily completed one course for credit in early childhood education or it's equivalent at institution of higher education, or is enrolled in that course within six (6) months after assuming the position.
or
- The person shall have satisfactorily completed an assistant child care teacher training program approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
In addition:
- An assistant teacher who works with children under the age of two (2) years must complete the course entitled: Fundamentals of Infant and Toddler Care or must hold the Infant/Toddler Credential.
- All staff must obtain two (2) hours of SIDS training prior to starting at the center. Staff who work solely at the school-aged programs do not need to obtain SIDS training.
- All staff must receive training in infant/child CPR with AED by a trained CPR instructor within six (6) months of assuming the position. A refresher course must be taken prior to the current CPR certificate's expiration date.
- An assistant teacher who works with school-aged children must obtain training in working with school-aged children through the 10 hour School-Age Assistant Child Care Worker course.
- An assistant teacher who works over twenty (20) hours per week is required to obtain twenty-five (25) hours of continuing education per year. An assistant teacher who works twenty (20) or less hours per week is required to obtain fifteen (15) hours of continuing education per year. Continuing education hours must fit the criteria set forth in DCF 251.
- All staff shall take part in mandatory staff meetings and in-service training.
- New staff shall successfully complete an orientation offered by the Director/Administrator or Assistant Directors.
- All staff working in programs with children 5 years of age or younger must take a course in Shaken Baby Syndrome or an Interim training prior to starting at the center. The full Shaken Baby Syndrome course must be taken within the first six (6) months of hire.
