Clery Act Compliance Administrator

Position Summary

Assists in coordinating the Michigan State University Clery Act Compliance Program. Assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of policies and procedures to facilitate basic institutional compliance with the Clery Act, HEA fire safety requirements, and the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act. Assists in the preparation, publishing, and distribution of the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.


This position will provide depth and backup to support the Clery Act compliance structure. The Clery Act is a federal law that includes a campus-wide program of tremendous importance.


Primary accountabilities include:



+ Collaborates with campus partners, including the MSU Police, regarding issuance of “timely warnings” and “emergency notifications,” classification of crimes, and compliance with other Clery Act Requirements.


+ Identifies and maintains the list of institutional “campus security authorities” (CSAs), as that term is defined under the Clery Act and provides training on Clery Act requirements to CSAs and institutional stakeholders.


+ Assists in facilitating the Clery Compliance Committee meetings, trainings, and discussions associated with changes to and information contained within the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report. Attends the monthly Clery Compliance Steering Committee and facilitates related items such as setting the agenda.


+ Compiles data and other information from various campus CSAs and law enforcement agencies for analysis and inclusion in various Clery required public disclosures.


+ Collaborates with the MSU Land Management Office and others to maintain an accurate list of MSU’s “Clery Act geography.”


+ Assists in the development and issuance of notices announcing the availability of the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report to current and prospective students and employees.


Minimum Requirements

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a related field of study; and one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in assessing compliance in an academic, research or other complex compliance environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Previous experience complying with the requirements of the Clery Act.


Master's degree preferred


Comprehensive knowledge of theories, concepts and practices and ability to use in complex, difficult and/or unprecedented situations. The role would be functioning in many high-level federal compliance decision making spaces, including determining emergency messaging to campus.

Uses patterns, trends, and precedents to analyze situations and determine appropriate course of action or approach to solving problems.


Independence of Action: Results are defined and existing practices are used as guidelines to determine specific work methods and carries out work activities independently; supervisor/manager is available to resolve problems.
