About the Job
We are hiring a Clinical Unit Educator for our Recovery Room at Spartanburg Medical Center!
- Full Time - 7:30am to 4:00pm
The Perioperative Clinical Unit Educator is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating education for all Perioperative Department associates. Education will be presented in a standardized manner to ensure quality care for all patient populations. The Perioperative Clinical Unit Educator incorporates evidence-based practice in onboarding materials, Perioperative Nurse Residency programs, continuing education, and simulation scenarios/skills. The Perioperative Clinical Unit Educator will collaborate with the healthcare team to support frontline staff and ensure patients receive the highest quality, patient-centered care. The Perioperative Clinical Unit Educator utilizes clinical expertise to improve staff knowledge and patient outcomes. The Perioperative Clinical Unit Educator reports to the RN Manager of Perioperative Education and Clinical Competency and to their respect Perioperative Department RN Managers. Education
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
Experience
- 3 years of experience within a Perioperative field of nursing
License/Registration/Certifications
- Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) licensure permitting practice in South Carolina
- American Heart Association Certification as follows per Perioperative Department:

Core Job Responsibilities
All Perioperative Clinical Educators will:
- Successfully completes hospital and Perioperative Clinical Unit Educator orientation
- Successfully completes annual hospital and Perioperative Department based required competencies and education
- Assists in organizing information for staff meetings; takes notes during meetings and responsible for distributing meeting notes to associates within their Perioperative Department.
- Collaborate with ancillary departments to provide standard education for quality patient care
- Collects, monitors, and analyzes nursing quality indicators to identify trends and education needs
- Complies with established Perioperative Department and system policies and procedures
- Conducts concurrent review and audits of patient care records to evaluate care and documentation compliance of staff and assists with development and implementation of the departmental process improvement efforts based on identified needs
- Create and lead perioperative nursing education classes, competencies, and blitz/roving education
- Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability by participating in patient care within the Perioperative Department as needed per the Perioperative Department schedule.
- Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability by performing other duties as necessary
- Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate infection prevention strategies to prevent surgical site infections
- Demonstrates knowledge of standard and transmission-based precautions to reduce the risk of cross-contamination by using appropriate disinfectant according to pathogen present in the environment.
- Design, develop, and implement standardized education to all nursing staff in all patient populations based on the annual learning education needs assessment
- Develop and lead Perioperative Department education competencies for all Perioperative nursing staff, while meeting regulatory requirements
- Ensures compliance with all clinical expectations regarding regulatory requirements such as: ER to OR patient throughput; improved on time starts initiatives; and reduction in surgical site infections
- Identifies the need to develop or revise policies and procedures pertaining to specialized patient populations and/or Perioperative department and hospital-based practices
- Identify opportunities for improvement and knowledge gaps within the Perioperative nursing and ancillary staff
- Implement evidence-based practices throughout onboarding and continued education
- Maintains electronic medical record superuser status within the Perioperative Department
- Provide coaching and feedback in a timely manner to nursing associates and nurse leaders
- Recognizes the importance of hand hygiene and performs appropriate hand hygiene techniques
- Responsible for continual maintenance of all elements of the Perioperative Department associate’s education record
- Responsible for demonstrating competency for all new equipment and procedures.
- Responsible for the coordination of nursing students shadowing experiences within in the Perioperative Department Serve as a nursing leader and mentor throughout orientation, onboarding, and continued education
- Serve as an expert resource to front-line staff for all standardized education
- Serves on Perioperative Department and system-based committees
Pre-Operative Clinical Unit Educator Specific Responsibilities:
- Provides quality patient care and education to staff in accordance with the standards devised and distributed via the American Society of Peri-Anesthesia Nurses (ASPAN)
Intraoperative RN Clinical Unit Educator Specific Responsibilities:
- Provides quality patient care and education to staff in accordance with the standards devised and distributed via the Association of Peri-Operative Nurses (AORN)
- Responsible for point of care testing records maintenance and supply reordering
Post-Operative Clinical Unit Educator Specific Responsibilities:
- Provides quality patient care and education to staff in accordance with the standards devised and distributed via the American Society of Peri-Anesthesia Nurses (ASPAN)
Endoscopy Clinical Unit Educator Specific Responsibilities:
- Provides quality patient care and education to staff in accordance with the standards devised and distributed via the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA)
- Responsible for point of care testing records maintenance and supply reordering
