Position Overview
The Clinical Laboratory Trainer prepares and facilitates training for new hire and existing employee training in the clinical laboratory, with guided direction from training leadership. This role supports Exact Sciences Laboratories through subject matter and training expertise to ensure all team members are trained properly and competencies are successfully met. This role assists in maintaining accurate data reporting practices to ensure a consistent and diligent capture of training and competency. In addition, this role is responsible for keeping employees of multiple levels up to date on processes and procedures through training and editing training materials/assessments/competencies to reflect current process. Lastly, this role completes moderate and/or high complexity competencies/end-user-proficiency assessments for learners and file training documentation appropriately. As needed, this role provides on-shift training. This role acts as a mentor for entry-level trainers.
Essential Duties
Include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Delivers training through in-person training, virtual training, hands-on/on-the-job training, virtual training, and other modalities, as needed.
- Identifies and adapt training/facilitation style to meet learner needs, in the moment.
- Facilitates small or large group learning sessions.
- Administers learning exams and/or competency direct observations.
- Assists in creation, edit, and maintenance of training and competency materials.
- Maintains competency in assigned test processes, in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Performs pre-analytic, analytical, and/or post-analytical tasks, in the laboratories, as assigned.
- Stays informed and up to date on new/edited SOPs, assignments, and changes in the laboratory processes in which they train.
- Participate in team projects, as assigned.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of training through surveys, observations, and feedback.
- Maintain accurate records of training and competency, in accordance with applicable policies and procedures.
- Collaborates with other trainers cross-functionally.
- Completes team administrative duties, as assigned.
- Motivates and inspire learners to do their best work through coaching.
- Leads and motivates peers through positive influence.
- Supports employee engagement initiatives.

- Support and comply with the company’s Quality Management System policies and procedures.
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

- Ability to work nights and/or weekends, as assigned.
- Ability to work overtime, as needed.
- Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for up to 50% of a typical working day.
- Ability to work seated for approximately 20% of a typical working day. Ability to work standing for approximately 80% of a typical working day.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds for approximately 25% of a typical working day.
- Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
- Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
- Ability to use various types of laboratory equipment; including microscopes, microtomes, blades, strainers, and pipettes for extended periods of time.
- May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
- Ability to use near vision to view samples at close range.
- May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens, and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.
- Ability and means to travel between local Exact Sciences Madison locations.
- Ability to travel up to 5% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.
- Ability to work 100% of the time onsite at assigned laboratory location.
- For some processes you may be required to successfully complete an assessment showing understanding of Exact Sciences Epic processes necessary to the job functions with a score of 80% or higher. Minimum Qualifications
- Associates Degree in Business Administration, Education, Chemical, Physical, Biological, or Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or field related to the essential duties of the job; or High School Diploma/General Education Degree (GED) and 2 years of relevant experience in lieu of Associates Degree.
- 4+ years of professional experience related to the essential duties of the position.
- 1+ years of clinical laboratory experience with a strong understanding of working in a laboratory with professional working knowledge of HIPAA, GLP, GDP, and laboratory terminology and equipment.
- Strong understanding of instructor-led, virtual-led, technical, and/or hands-on/on-the-job training.
- Excellent computer skills to include Internet navigation, use of virtual meeting tools and platforms, email usage, word processing, and data/records management.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, such as: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or OneNote.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- 1+ year experience in a mentorship role or directly/indirectly leading others.
- Qualified to complete competency assessment per CLIA regulations by meeting one of the following criteria:
- Bachelor's Degree in a Chemical, Physical, Biological, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology from an accredited institution, with 2+ years of lab experience/lab-education program experience in a lab providing moderate and/or high complexity testing or 1+ year performing high complexity testing;
- Associates Degree in a Laboratory Science or Medical Technology; or equivalent education and training (specified below) and 2+ years lab experience/lab-education program experience in a lab providing high complexity testing.
- Equivalent Education and Training:
- At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, including one of the following and 3 months documented laboratory training/education and 2+ years lab experience/lab-education program experience in a lab providing high complexity testing:
- 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or
- 24 semester hours of science courses that include:
- 6 semester hours of chemistry; and
- 6 semester hours of biology; and
- 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
- At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, including one of the following and 3 months documented laboratory training/education and 2+ years lab experience/lab-education program experience in a lab providing high complexity testing:
- Experience with a lab information management (LIM) or LIS software.
- Experience with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS).
- Possession of and ability to maintain ASCP certification throughout employment in position.
Salary Range:
$50,000.00 - $81,000.00The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually.
