Our patients are our focus and are the heart of everything we do. As a Resident, you will receive exceptional training to prepare you for a life long career in Orthotics & Prosthetics. Under supervision, direct progressing to indirect, you will provide comprehensive prosthetic and orthotic care with the highest level of customer service. This includes assessing patients, formulating & implementing treatment plans, following-up with your patients and participating in practice management.
You will enjoy the ability of combining your unique blend of clinical and technical skills to evaluate patients, custom design, fabricate and fit prostheses and/or orthoses to deliver exceptional outcomes for the patients you serve. You will collaborate with other members of the rehabilitation team and innovate utilizing the latest technology as we all strive to empower human potential together.
The Clinician Resident is bound by the prevailing residency rules, regulations and standards set forth by NCOPE as well as the Code of Professional Responsibility from the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics (ABC).
Depending on the operational requirements, size of the Hanger Clinic and laws imposed by state and/or local governments, this position may include some or all of the functions listed below:
- Collaborate with physicians in the evaluation and analysis of a patient’s need for prosthetic or orthotic services; recommend treatment options to physicians when necessary.
- Examine and evaluate patient's needs in relation to disease and functional loss.
- Formulate design of prostheses/orthoses.
- Select materials/componentry, take cast/measurements, model rectifications/layouts, taking into account new techniques and materials.
- Perform fittings, including static and dynamic alignments.
- Evaluate prosthetic/orthotic device on patient and adjust to assure fit, function, medical efficacy, and quality of work.
- Instruct patient in use of prosthesis/orthosis.
- Identify and reconcile issues/problems to ensure patient satisfaction with device(s) provided.
- Provide follow-up with patients and physicians.
- Provide detailed clinical notes to patient records that support medical necessity.
- Provide information to administrative staff to conduct reimbursement activities.
- Provide in-service training to physicians and allied health care professionals.
- Utilize effective materials management, quality and performance processes to maximize device quality and medical efficacy, maintaining a proper balance with costs and operational/financial performance.
- Adhere to all safety regulations; compliance with Medicare, HIPAA and other governmental regulations; compliance with bloodborne and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements.
- Available to participate in on-call if applicable.
- Provide assistance to other clinical staff.
- Perform other duties or special projects as assigned.
Supervision Received:
Supervision is to be provided by local NCOPE accredited residency director, residency mentor(s) and Hanger Clinic clinical staff as determined by residency director. Normally receives detailed instructions on all work.
Minimum Qualifications:- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree or post-graduate Certificate in Orthotics and/or Prosthetics from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited college or university is required.
- Must have or be eligible to obtain a valid driver's license and driving record within the standards outlined in Hanger's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy and Procedures.
- Preferred: Master’s degree and post-graduate Certificate in Orthotics and/or Prosthetics from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited college or university.

Physical Abilities
- Ability to lift patients using biomedical techniques frequently throughout the course of a work day/shift; must be capable of easily lifting fifty (50) pounds of weight alone.
- Ability to walk, bend, stand and reach constantly during a work day.
- Visual acuity (near and distant) sufficient to maintain accurate records, recognize people, and understand written direction.
- Ability to speak and hear sufficiently to understand and give directions.
- Ability to push wheeled equipment throughout the facility.
- Fine motor skills adequate for scheduling and preparing patients, equipment and supplies for treatment.
- Ability to participate in sustained activities for many hours in duration in accordance with state labor laws.
