Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:45pm; evening & weekend hours as necessary
Job Summary: The Clinical Veterinarian leads animal husbandry activities. Oversees medical care of all animals used for research and teaching. Provides strategic vision and implements systematic continuous improvement operations to provide leading-class service and facilities to the research community.
Additional Department Summary: The University of Alabama, which is an AAALAC Accredited program, is seeking a highly qualified individual to serve as the Clinical Veterinarian. This position will play a crucial role in advancing the University’s research mission, with responsibility for ensuring the highest standards of care and welfare for animals used in research and teaching. Collaborate with researchers and faculty to support their animal research projects and will provide leadership to the Animal Care staff and University concerning animal welfare best practices.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) from an accredited veterinary school and five (5) years of experience. Current license to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Alabama or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of start date.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Current Alabama State Controlled Substances Number and DEA license or the ability to obtain them in a timely manner. LATG certification or the ability to obtain it in a timely manner. Strong knowledge of federal, state, and university regulations governing the care and use of animals in research and teaching.
Skills and Knowledge: Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with researchers, faculty, and staff. Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in a lab animal facility, preferably in an academic or research setting.
Experience working with fish, both wild and captive. Experience managing budgets and overseeing facility operations.
