GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Senior Cloud Engineer will lead the design, implementation, and management of a sophisticated virtual network environment to support the training of Air Force defensive cyber operators. This role requires an expert who can architect, deploy, and oversee a scalable and flexible virtual range, starting with a baseline of 77 virtual machines and potentially expanding to hundreds. The network environment must support replication for up to 50 students at a time. The Senior Cloud Engineer will be responsible for strategic decision-making, ensuring the use of the most suitable technologies, whether on-premise with VMware or on commercial cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), or Microsoft Azure.

DUTIES
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Strategic Design and Architecture: Lead the design of complex, scalable cloud and on-premise network architectures tailored to training deliverables for Air Force defensive cyber operators.
- Advanced Implementation and Deployment: Oversee the deployment of the designed architecture, ensuring high availability, performance, and security using VMware for on-premise solutions or AWS, GCP, and Azure for cloud deployments.
- Evaluate and implement best practices for deploying, managing, and scaling complex virtual networks.
- Lead the automation of network deployment and management processes to enhance efficiency and reduce the potential for errors.
- Leadership and Collaboration: Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, guiding them through complex problem-solving and project execution.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate cloud engineering best practices into all project components and processes.
- Act as the primary point of contact for stakeholders, ensuring clear communication of project status, challenges, and requirements.
- Innovation and R&D: Continuously research emerging cloud technologies, tools, and methodologies to incorporate cutting-edge solutions into the network design.
- Lead initiatives to optimize network performance, security, and cost-effectiveness through innovative solutions and automation.
- Compliance and Documentation: Ensure all network designs and implementations comply with Air Force security protocols, standards, and best practices.
- Maintain thorough documentation of network architecture, configurations, and processes, ensuring clarity and accessibility for future reference.
- Additional Responsibilities:
- Travel as required to support network deployment, troubleshooting, or stakeholder meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned, with an emphasis on driving continuous improvement and innovation.
EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; Equivalent work experience may be considered.
- 10+ years of experience in cloud engineering, with a proven track record of designing, deploying, and managing large-scale virtual networks on platforms like AWS, GCP, Azure, and VMware.
- Extensive experience in leading cloud projects from conception through deployment and maintenance, with a focus on scalability, flexibility, and security. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance and ability to obtain a TS/SCI clearance.
- Experience with PCTE is preferred.
- Must be able to work effectively in a fast paced, multi-faceted environment with rapidly changing demands.
- Expert knowledge of cloud engineering principles, virtualization technologies, and network architecture design.
- Strong leadership skills with experience mentoring and guiding junior engineers.
- Advanced problem-solving capabilities with a proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues.
- Excellent communication and project management skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders.
- Advanced certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional, Google Cloud Certified Professional Cloud Architect, Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, or VMware Certified Advanced Professional (VCAP) are highly desirable.
- Must have strong writing and communications skills.
- Must be able to work well under pressure, prioritize task, and meet deadlines.
- Must be detail oriented, with exceptional problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills.
- Must have excellent interpersonal and analytical skills.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams).
- Must be able to work in a challenging environment where constructive feedback from others is encouraged.
