About the Job
Unit based responsibilities for data collection related to status of patients, ongoing and measuring responses, treatment and procedures, equipment maintenance and reinforcing patient education. Functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
Education
High School Diploma or equivalent. Completion of a Health Occupational Program Equivalent to or exceeding the Nursing Assistant Program or completion of first semester of LPN program.
Experience:
1 to 2 years Acute Care experience preferred. Must complete training and required competencies within 90 days of employment. Ability to greet and effectively relate to patients; ability to learn a variety of skills; some computer and clerical skills. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing. Presents oneself in a professional manner through appearance and conduct.
Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations:
BLS competency. Completion of Patient Support Associate training within the first 90 days of employment.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
Computer Skills.

Must have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care as defined by job responsibilities and performance standards in this job description to include Patient Safety Performance Standards for the identified population served below:
- Pre-term/High Risk Neonate
- Neonate (newborn to 28 days)
- Pediatric (One month to 12 years)
- Young Adult (18 to 35 years)
- Adult (35 to 65 years)
- Geriatric (65 years and over)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF COMPETENT PERFORMANCE FOR THIS POSITION
- Uses at least two patient identifiers (name, date of birth and wristband) whenever administering medications or blood products; taking blood samples and other specimens for clinical testing; or providing any other treatments or procedures.
- Labels all specimens with patient identification, collector’s initials and time of collection before taking to lab
- Performs treatments and procedures to include: Specimen collection, venipuncture, catheter discontinuation, incentive spirometry, ADL’s, skin care and ROM.
- Takes vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, weight, height, respiration and pulse; then accurately records in the patient’s medical record.
- Performs finger stick blood sugars, then accurately records in the patient’s medical record and reports to the nurse.
- Assists with preparing patient for surgical procedures.
- Assists with preparing patient for surgical procedures.
- Delivers and sets up patient food trays and assists with feeding patients as needed.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients ranging from newborn to geriatric.
- Maintains unit based competencies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
