- Job Responsibilities
- Responsible for timely review of patient records in order to identify an appropriate selection of codes that willaccurately reflect the reason for admission, extent of care received, and level of severity of illness.
- Assigns and sequences ICD-9-CM diagnosis and procedures codes correctly.
- Seeks clarification from medical records and healthcare providers when necessary.
- Enhances coding knowledge and skills with continuing education activities and by reviewing pertinentliterature.
- Education
- High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) required. Associate's degree in HealthInformation Management (HIM) preferred.
- Licensure/Certification/Registration
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA),Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required.
- Work Experience
- 0 to 4 years progressive experience in a related field required.
- Skills and Attributes
- Requires a strong understanding of the specialized concepts, practices, and procedures in the area ofspecialization. Requires some assistance in tasking and prioritizing but able to work independently. Requirescritical thinking skills and decisive judgment. Works under general supervision. Must be able to work in astressful environment and take appropriate action.
