The Coder II plays a key role in providing the highest quality of patient care while the patient is at Union Health.
The Emergency Department at Union Hospital provides emergency care for patients of all ages, treating various common illnesses and injuries, and performing immediate treatment and lifesaving procedures in all types of emergency situations.
The department also serves as the initial access point for their Certified Primary Stroke Center, Accredited Chest Pain center with PCI, and Verified Level III Trauma Center.

Coder II Details
Essential Job Duties:
- Is knowledgeable regarding Hospital and Departmental policies, procedures, and general information.
- Maintains strict confidentiality of medical information and strictly adheres to the rules and regulations of the facility.
- Recognizes all departments within the facility and their interactions with the Emergency Department.
- Utilizes appropriate reference materials such as facility policies, departmental policies, employee handbook, coding reference material, etc.
- Demonstrates responsibility for professional growth.
- Communicates effectively with all customers and managers.
- Communicates with manager regarding problems, questions, etc.
- Offers suggestions regarding in-service programs, work flow, job satisfaction in regards to daily duties.
- Is knowledgeable regarding coding data entry.
- Accurately and precisely codes and/or reviews the major procedure portion of the claim as well as E/M Levels, and departmental supply charges.
- Is familiar with terminology and the procedures performed in the Emergency Department.
- Reports pending queries for physician and nursing response > 72 hours to nursing manager.
- Maintains report of records not able to code due to missing documentation.
- Capable of interpreting physician documentation and asking questions of the physician.
- Knowledge of CPT code modifiers and their appropriate application.
- Knowledge of rules regarding add-ons and separate procedure CPT codes.
- Capable of researching and implementing coding changes because of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and Fiscal Intermediary.
- Can collaborate with Clinical Educator on educational opportunities.
- Keeps current on coding changes and regulatory agency requirements.
- Able to prioritize and display appropriate time management skills.
- Keys information in an efficient and accurate manner.
- Remains current on updates of the Lynx module and maintains competency.
Qualifications:
- Functional grasp of standard written and verbal English and good spelling.
- Requires knowledge of coding, billing, and auditing.
- Requires good organizational skills.
- Prefer RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, LPN.
- Prefer previous medical coding experience
- Interpersonal skills to work with other departments and employees.
- Computer knowledge.
