About the department:
Information Technology Department (ITD) is divided into several teams, comprised of highly-skilled and well-trained staff members who are dedicated to delivering excellence to every customer. The department covers the whole information technology spectrum, including: Applications Software Development, Communications, Customer Advocacy, Departmental Support, Financial, Network Management, Operations, Project Management, Server Management, Technical Support, and Telephones.
The department is responsible for the development, operation, and maintenance of all County enterprise information systems and the direct technical support of multiple organizations These organizations include: the Board of Supervisors, County Administrative Office, Emergency Services, Airports, Parks, Central Services, and Veteran’s Services. As a critical member of the County’s Governance processes, Information Technology chairs or actively participates on a number of committees and communities-of-interest.
About the position:
Communications Technician I is part of a career series for Communications Technician I, II, and Senior Communications Technician. Classes in this series perform a variety of skilled work in the assembly, installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of various radio transmitting and receiving equipment, microwave system equipment, and other communications and electronic equipment;and installation of LMR antennas and microwave dishes on communications towers; and do other related work as required.
Typical Tasks and Representative Duties
Installs, repairs, maintains, and adjusts various communications equipment, including microwave, mobile and fixed radio transmitters and receivers, telephone equipment and devices, and other communications devices. Installs cabling, wires and terminations for telephone and radio communications systems; troubleshoots defective communications equipment, using various testing equipment such as data analyzers, spectrum analyzers, voltmeters, ohmmeters and tube testers; performs shop work in the maintenance and repair of communications equipment; measures frequencies, power output and modulation of transmitters to insure compliance with federal regulations; adjusts transmitters, receivers, data modems and other equipment for maximum efficiency of operation; conducts field tests to determine causes of interruptions or interference in the operation of systems; operates and monitors communications equipment; operates and monitors data interconnection equipment; may be required to respond to emergency calls at any time; may be required to work a standby work schedule.
