About the Job
The County of San Mateo is looking for qualified candidates to join the County Executive’s Office of Community Affairs as Community Workers II. There are currently two positions to be filled, and bilingual skills are preferred.
Working as an integral part of the Office of Community Affairs’ team and modeling the effective outreach efforts of the 2020 Census, the Community Workers will participate in civic engagement, community outreach, and community education, will assist with enhancing the office’s social media presence, will support outreach efforts for multiple County departments, and will help with administrative duties.

The ideal candidate for this position will have the ability to connect with vulnerable and underserved communities in San Mateo County, will have a passion for storytelling and social media creation, and will be bilingual with the ability to speak English and Spanish, Tagalog, Cantonese and/or Mandarin, or a language present in San Mateo County (such as Tongan, Samoan, etc.)
The Community Workers will partner with other bilingual team members from the Office of Community Affairs and will report to the Outreach Team Supervisor. The Community Workers will also work with community leaders, members, and organizations including educators, non-profit organizations, religious groups, business owners, and youth from diverse perspectives and backgrounds. The Community Workers will support efforts to ensure that San Mateo County is an equitable and inclusive county.

The ideal candidate will possess:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Professional experience with an emphasis on racial and social equity, and inclusion efforts.
- Ability to coordinate multiple projects, organize priorities, and manage a flexible schedule.
- Experience working with a diverse group of people (e.g. ethnic background, religion, nationality, education level, language, socio-economic status, etc.).
- Confidence in public speaking (including in an additional bilingual language if applicable).
- Familiarity with social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and X.
- Ability to work independently and complete tasks with minimal supervision and work collaboratively as a team member.
- Ability to think critically about issues, challenge old ideas, and offer creative and innovative solutions or new programs for consideration.
- Creative storytelling skills and ability to generate original content ideas.
- Experience creating visual and written materials or presentations; experience in web design and graphic design is preferred but not required, e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.).
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and learn on-the-job.
- Proficient computer skills, e.g. Microsoft Office, Google Applications, etc.
- Experience creating effective social media content and driving engagement on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
- Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours, as needed.
- Ability to work remotely work, as needed.
