Job Description: The Senior Construction Accountant will be responsible for overseeing all accounting functions related to construction projects, including budgeting, cost tracking, contract management, and financial reporting. This role requires a deep understanding of construction accounting principles and the ability to work closely with project managers, subcontractors, and other stakeholders to ensure the financial health of the projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Accounting:
- Manage and oversee the accounting process for multiple construction projects.
- Track project costs, budgets, and expenses to ensure alignment with contract terms and approved budgets.
- Prepare project financial statements, including profit and loss statements, job cost reports, and variance analyses.
Contract Management:
- Review and manage contracts, including billing schedules, change orders, and subcontractor agreements.
- Ensure that contract terms are followed and payments are processed in a timely manner.
Job Costing and Budgeting:
- Maintain accurate job cost reports and reconcile project budgets against actual costs.
- Provide regular budget forecasts and variance analysis to project managers and executives.
- Assist in preparing and reviewing project budgets, identifying cost-saving opportunities.
Accounts Payable and Receivable:
- Oversee the processing of vendor invoices and subcontractor payments, ensuring compliance with contract terms.
- Manage accounts receivable, including progress billing and collection of payments from clients.
- Reconcile project-related accounts and monitor cash flow related to ongoing construction work.
Financial Reporting:
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports related to construction projects.
- Assist in the preparation of financial statements for audit and tax purposes.
- Provide financial analysis and support for internal and external stakeholders.
Compliance and Auditing:
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including labor laws and tax requirements.
- Assist with internal and external audits, providing necessary documentation and explanations.
Process Improvement:
- Identify areas for process improvement and implement best practices in project accounting.
- Recommend and help implement accounting software and systems to improve efficiency and accuracy.
Team Collaboration:
- Collaborate closely with project managers, estimators, and other departments to ensure financial aspects of construction projects are well-managed.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior accounting staff.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in construction accounting.
- Strong understanding of construction accounting principles, including job costing, percentage of completion, and contract billing.
