The focus of the position will be to estimate Engineer, Procure and
Construct (EPC) projects as directed by UCC Sales Management. Primary
responsibilities overseeing bid packages serving the heavy industrial
and power markets, with an understanding of engineering, procurement and
construction processes associated with material handling, air pollution
control and wastewater treatment projects.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated capabilities in collaborating
with others to perform estimating and proposal development within a team
environment. Work experience with a privately held company will be
beneficial.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The Construction Estimator will:
- Develop accurate and detailed cost estimates for construction and
Balance of Plant (BOP) components based on engineering designs,
specifications, and supplier quotes.
- Evaluate construction methodologies, material costs, labor rates,
and equipment requirements.
- Create project budgets and work with financial teams to establish
cost controls.
- Collaborate with the engineering and design teams to understand the
project scope, ensuring all necessary elements of the construction
and BOP components are included in the estimates.
- Clarify scope details with subcontractors and vendors to ensure
precise and complete bids.
- Request and evaluate quotes from suppliers and subcontractors for
BOP items like civil works, electrical systems, piping, and
mechanical systems.
- Analyze bids and negotiate with suppliers to ensure competitive
pricing.
- Identify potential project risks related to cost, schedule, and
constructability.
- Provide recommendations for mitigating risks, including contingency
allowances in estimates.
- Work with project planners to integrate cost estimates with project
schedules, ensuring realistic timelines for construction and
installation.
- Evaluate labor availability and equipment lead times for impact on
project duration.
- Prepare cost estimates as part of bid packages for submission to
clients.
- Participate in client presentations and negotiations to justify
estimates and demonstrate project value.
- Collaborate with design and construction teams to explore
alternative construction methods or materials that may reduce costs
without sacrificing quality or schedule.
- Maintain records of estimates, assumptions, and supplier quotes for
future reference.
- Provide regular updates and reports to sales management and
leadership on the status of estimates and budgeting.
- Ensure that all estimates comply with industry standards,
project-specific requirements, and safety regulations.
- Conduct post-project cost analysis to compare estimates with actual
costs, identifying areas for improvement in future estimates.
- All other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- A Bachelor of Science is preferred (Construction Management,
Construction Technology or equal) but re evant experience could be a
suitable substitution.
- Self-perform general contractor experience is preferred but not
required.
- At least 5 to 10 years as an estimator for heavy industrial projects
- General business acumen
- Preferred by not required, experience with Aspen Tech estimating
software. UCC uses this software tool to develop internal turnkey
estimates. Potential candidates must show the ability and motivation
to learn and use the tool.
Characteristics and Skills:
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple
projects and deal with ambiguity and competing priorities
- Ensure accurate cost control, risk management, and alignment with
sales objectives, essential in a turnkey EPC environment
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Motivated, with a focus on results
- High energy and commitment
- Mechanical and analytical aptitude
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Proficient in CAD (AutoCAD products preferred).
- Must be willing to travel 20-40% of the time to various plant sites.
