About the Job
Summary
Our client is a well-known and highly sought after speciality steel fabricator, designer, and builder located in the Sacramento area of California. They are currently in immediate need of a ConstructionProject Manager (PM) to be added to their team.
The Project Manager is responsible for a project’s performance. This is accomplished by working closely with Project Engineers (PE’s), designers, in-house fabrication team, field personnel, and Senior Project Management. The PM may also function as a Project Engineer (PE) depending on the job size.
In addition to their normal project responsibilities, Level III team members are expected to train, develop and coach those who work with them when applicable (PE’s, and in some cases, other PM’s). It is expected of this individual that she/he will provide clear direction and guidance to level I and II team members in a constructive and collaborative approach.
Duties & Responsibilities
Schedule Management: Understand and track the project schedule.
Customer Schedule: Receive, digest, and understand regular project schedule updates from the customer and what the customer’s expectations are for our client’s SOW.
Internal Project Schedule:
Create a baseline gantt chart schedule in standard format combining the information provided by the customer and an understanding of our client’s business.
Update the baseline schedule monthly accounting for all project shifts that affect our client’s SOW.
Distribute this schedule and the information therein to our client’s internal teams so they are aware of their expectations. Specifically:
Submittal and fabrication drawing due dates to the Design Department.
Fabrication due dates to the shop.
Coordinate schedule changes with the internal teams to adapt the work plans to meet (or adjust) new expectations given by the customer.
Internal 4 Week Look Ahead: Weekly generate and distribute a 4 week look ahead schedule with the Field Foreman for on-site work.
Schedule-related Escalation: Formally notify the customer and escalate to resolution per contract specifications when:
The customer does not provide our client’s clear deliverable dates on their schedule.
The project schedule updates from the customer affect our client’s planned work.
RFI’s, Submittals, and CO’s being tracked by our client’s PE are not being responded to in a timely manner.
Finance Management: Understand, track, and control the project finances:
Budget & Cost Tracking:
Dissect and understand the budget provided by the Estimating Team, both the dollars and the hours.
Utilize the Traculator to:
Communicate the budgeted hours to our client’s Internal Teams.
Project and plan for how hours will be spent on a weekly basis.
Track how hours are actually spent weekly
Ensure that hour budgets are not being exceeded. If they are, meet with the relevant team to create a corrective action plan for the budget
Approve vendor invoices and ensure that budget is not being exceeded.
Billing:
Generate Schedule of Values (SOV) that will keep the project overbilled and cash-flow positive.
Provide the Accounting Department with the information to bill monthly per progress payment negotiation with the customer.
Project the billing amounts per month for the next 3-9 months.
Work In Progress (WIP): Estimate the amount of work remaining on the project monthly.
Internal Planning:
Facilitate Project Kickoff Meeting
Facilitate Detailed Kickoff Meetings with design, shop, and field departments to review SOW.
Ensure your project’s SOW items are on track at the weekly Production Meeting.
Ensure that team members are communicating efficiently. If there is a gap, step in to make sure the communication goes through.
Strategize with field foreman, designers, fabricators to establish the most efficient means of installation possible. This may include design tweaks, picking eye placement, installation sequence, etc. and can occur at all phases of the project; it is especially impactful during design.
Coordinate with the field foreman for the next upcoming work on site, ensure that materials will be delivered in time for the work, and that the site and other trades are ready to receive that phase of the work. Expectation is to visit the project site 1x per week minimum when our client’s SOW is active.
Customer Management: Manage working relationships with customers/owners.
Attend weekly meetings as required.
Correspond regularly and promptly to customer’s requests (phone, email, voicemail, verbal, etc.)
Document significant changes in writing confirmation from the customer.
Plan and sequence work together to ensure optimal performance
Work through construction issues and adapt plans as needed. This may require scheduling and leading a meeting together with the various parties involved.
Estimate and provide change orders (CO’s) when applicable.
Attend and speak on behalf of our client at Project Labor Agreement (PLA) meetings when applicable
Subcontractor Management:
Schedule and facilitate meetings as required.
Correspond and coordinate regularly (phone, email, voicemail, verbal, etc.)
Ensure that subcontracts and associated documents are in place for the subcontractor to work for our client.
Lead:
Coach and explain industry best-practices and project management strategy to team members when there is opportunity.
Demonstrate leadership in Health, Safety & Environmental protection on the project and ensure that the project provides a safe workplace.
Report:
Prepare monthly project updates for supervisor and company management. Specific items to present:
Updated gantt chart schedule
Updated Traculator with tracked and costed hours
Gross Margin
Facilitate post-mortem meetings with the entire team after projects completion to present the project’s lessons learned in a positive and constructive manner.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimal of 2-4 years of higher education (Construction Management or Engineering preferred) or (7) years of trade experience (without the degree).
Capable of managing up to $10M+ valued projects
Professional Engineer License valued. (Preferred)
Federal, state and local knowledge and experience.
Knowledge and experience with Word, Excel, MS Project, and G-suite.
Knowledge with Primavera P6 Scheduling Software is valued. (Preferred)

Physical Demands:
The position will require the occasional physical ability to climb, and function in elevation changes by means of self-propulsion to include ladders, scaffolding, stairs, etc.
Ability to negotiate construction work areas in a safe manner and behavior.
Performing the duties, the employee will regularly be in an active onsite construction environment where they will be exposed to moving mechanical components & equipment.
