Summary A construction superintendent works side by side with the property owner, project manager and other construction design engineers to complete a project in a given time frame. He is given the task to employ the suitable workers to complete the job and oversee all aspects of the construction project from beginning to finish or supervise only a portion of the building process.
Duties
A construction superintendent is in charge of coordinating and overseeing activities of workers and construction needs for all phases of the project. The superintendent must fully understand the project requirements with the ability to read and comprehend the contract documents (plans and specifications). By understanding the critical path of the construction sequence the superintendent will manage and coordinate the various activities properly to maintain the project schedule. Each component of the work put in place will be under his continuous inspection and observation to ensure conformity with the project requirements; the goal is to do it right the first time. The superintendent is the company representative in the eyes of the owner; all forms of interaction with the owner will be conducted in a professional honest manner enabling the owner to recognize the value of having Hutton build their project. A successful project is the result of constant planning, communication, pro-actively looking for conflicts and potential problems that will affect the schedule, ordering materials, solving problems, ensuring quality, reviewing the job budget, and ensuring we are meeting or exceeding the owners expectations.
Physical
Superintendent must have the use of both hands, must have good vision and good hearing with or without accommodations. Must be capable of working long hours when required and may also be required to lift up to eighty pounds with or without accommodations.
Education and Training Requirements for a Construction Superintendent
Specialized courses on design, building codes, site control, inspection procedures, safety, and scheduling as necessary.
Knowledge and Skills Requirements for a Construction Superintendent
A good construction superintendent must possess written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills to deal with superiors and construction crew; good time management skills; analytical and problem-solving skills, negotiation skills, leadership and motivation skills as well as advanced knowledge of construction procedures, practices, methods, equipment, materials, tools, precautions and utilities.
