Job Summary
The Controller position is accountable for the financial operations of the RECmint business unit, including the production of financial reports, analysis and forecasting of financial performance, and ensuring adequate controls with system support for accounting records and subledgers. A comprehensive set of controls and budgets are designed to mitigate risk, enhance the company's reported financial results, and ensure that results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.
Principal Responsibilities
Accounting and Control Leadership
- Consistently analyzes financial and associated operating data, and presents financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicates monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitors progress and changes and keeps senior leadership abreast of the financial status of the business.
- Establishes a cadence of insightful reporting and analyses to aid in understanding and decision-making among business unit ownership, leadership, and staff.
- Maintains internal control and safeguards for receipt of proceeds and release of expenditures.
- Manages cash flow forecasts in partnership with business unit leadership and Corporate Finance.
- Supports timely monthly closing and reporting schedules to meet leadership needs, as well as any surety-related bonding requirements.
- Leads business unit budgeting and forecasting processes; administer and review financial plans working closely with the Sr. Mgr. of Financial Planning & Analysis; and compare actual and/or forecasted results with a view to identify, explain, and address variances as appropriate.
- Oversees business unit accounts, ledgers, and systems that impact financial measurements to ensure completeness, accuracy and compliance with appropriate standards and regulatory requirements.
- Works closely with the Sr. Accounting Manager to coordinate all review and compliance activity.
- Supports tax planning and compliance needs of business unit at local, state and federal levels, as necessary.
- Continuously collaborates with leadership and business unit team to assess the financial efficacy of operations and establish processes to efficiently support operations.
- Manages and track the performance of assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines.
- Assists with creation, refinement, and/or implementation of business-specific accounting policies & procedures. Understand business processes and monitor to ensure efficacy and efficiency.
Finance Leadership
- Identifies opportunities for margin improvement, process efficiency, and efficient cash management. Leverages strengths of the Corporate Finance members.
- Develops and implements programs to achieve organizational goals and maximize business unit performance, including potential use of simulation modeling tools and predictive techniques for decision-making.
- Provides leadership in strengthening internal communications with business unit staff at all levels; creates and promotes a positive and supportive work environment.
- Establishes and promotes core values of the business as well as company-wide values
- Works closely with business leadership to refine/develop strategic direction and vision for the business that aligns with objectives.
- Works with BU President in setting business financial goals and measuring related performance, with an ability to identify and communicate clearly key drivers or causes of variances.
- Contributes useful input to executive decision making, promptly addresses related party concerns or requirements, and communicates regularly with team members relevant information regarding the company-at large and other businesses.
- Updates and refines workflows, establishing SOPs as necessary, and assigns accountability where applicable.
- Continuously improves the business unit's finance and controls capabilities, as well as analytics.
- Responsible for difficult, risk-oriented, or complex financial decisions required of the business unit, elevating as necessary to the CFO and/or President.
Technology Leadership
- Works with Sr. Accounting Manager to efficiently interface business unit transaction processing systems with accounting systems. Coordinates utilization and continuous learning with emerging business unit systems, processes and associated control features.
- Solves problems with an analytic approach to data interpretation rather than simply a reporting mindset.
- Translates complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels of the organization including finance and non-finance managers.
Basic Qualifications
- Degree required: Bachelor's Degree Accounting, finance or a related field is required
- CPA, prior work experience with high transaction volume businesses
- A minimum of five or more years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills & Experience
- Masters in business or information technology is helpful
- Experience in renewable energy field preferred
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Ability to work well with others in a collaborative team environment
- Self-motivated, willing to take a hands-on role and lead when appropriate
- Honest, reliable, self-aware, and conscientious
- Excellent organization and prioritization skills

Location and Hybrid Work
RECmint is part of the Sun Tribe Group of solar companies. Our shared HQ is in Charlottesville, VA on the historic downtown mall. Our team is based both in Charlottesville and Richmond.
You'll be expected to be in the HQ office at least 3 days per week during the first 12 months.
