Job Details
Summary: As the Controller, you'll shape our accounting strategies, ensuring best practices are at the forefront of our operations. You’ll oversee a growing team, currently consisting of two direct reports, and will work closely with the CEO to drive financial health across the business.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and continuous improvement of accounting policies and practices to align with the company’s growth goals. Drive initiatives that optimize processes and ensure the organization is always audit-ready.
- Oversee the monthly close process, including preparing accurate financial statements, general ledger reconciliations, and journal entries. Analyze financial data to identify trends, provide actionable insights, and make strategic recommendations to the executive team.
- Maintain and update WIP schedules in Spectrum software and Excel, ensuring accuracy and timeliness. Collaborate with the Operations Team for monthly reviews, addressing any variances and refining project cost controls.
- Manage payroll processes as needed, including building and finalizing W2s, 1099s, ACA reporting, and ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. Stay up-to-date on changing laws to mitigate any risk related to payroll or tax reporting.
- Oversee the AP/AR functions to ensure timely and accurate processing. Review and authorize job billings, lien waivers, and ensure appropriate collections and payments. Develop strategies for improving cash flow and reducing outstanding receivables.
- Lead decision-making around capital expenditures, asset purchases, and disposals. Provide recommendations based on thorough financial analysis and projected return on investment.
- Collaborate with the executive team on cash flow management, budgeting, and financial forecasting. Identify potential risks and opportunities, and adjust strategies to support the company’s financial health.
- Mentor and guide the accounting team, currently consisting of two direct reports, with the potential for team growth as the company expands. Foster a culture of continuous learning, encouraging staff to enhance their skills and efficiency.
- Serve as the primary expert on Spectrum software, troubleshooting issues and optimizing configurations to meet business needs. Assist other departments with financial data access and reporting tools.
- Work closely with the company’s external CPA firm to coordinate tax filings, annual financial reviews, and any other compliance-related matters.
- Manage federal, state, and local tax obligations, including payroll taxes, sales and use taxes, business personal property taxes, and income tax return information. Proactively identify tax-saving opportunities and ensure timely filings.
- Partner with Human Resources on benefits administration and other employee-related financial matters. Support the broader organization with financial guidance, ensuring a unified approach to reaching company objectives.
Qualifications:
- 8+ years in construction accounting, with a deep understanding of industry-specific practices.
- Proven experience in managing and mentoring a team.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting required; CPA or CCIFP certification is a plus.
- Familiarity with Viewpoint Spectrum software and Colorado tax regulations.
- Up-to-date knowledge of the latest accounting standards.
- Ability to work independently, communicate effectively, and generate solutions.
