Position Summary
Mesabi Metallics is looking for a Controller that will be responsible for overseeing the financial management and control of mining and plant operations. This role involves budgeting, financial reporting, cost control, and providing strategic insights to support efficient and profitable operations. The Controller will work closely with management to ensure financial accuracy and support operational goals
Job Description
Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will be responsible for the following:
- Plan, direct, and manage the financial and accounting activities, including month end close, maintenance of general ledger, financial reporting and analysis and financial audits.
- Review various operations and accounting reports for abnormalities and errors in reporting and work with management to develop corrective actions.
- Prepare reports which summarize and forecast plant business activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses and earnings based on past, present, and expected operations.
- Review and analyze unit costs and profit margins for finished products and product manufacturing costs.
- Oversee capital assets including depreciation, purchases, and retirements and ensure the annual asset inventory verification is completed.
- Ensure all capital requests have proper approval and are accounted for correctly.
- Analyze computer output, corrects errors and implement corrective procedures.
- Direct and/or prepare accounting journal entries at the end of each accounting period.
- Review and analyze manufacturing efficiencies and cost variances while keeping management informed of trends.
- Work with accounting team in support of the month-end, quarter-end and the year-end financial close ensuring compliance with GAAP and external financial audit requirements.
- Help develop and monitor inventory cycle counting or physical inventory procedures.
- Prepare and analyze account reconciliations and highlight to management potential issues affecting expenses, balances, or cash flow.
- Assist in preparation of monthly management report, supporting schedules and budget analysis. Some consolidation, audit and tax work as required.
- Utilize strong financial analysis & accounting skills to help identify process improvement opportunities.
- Strong systems knowledge, with the ability to gather data from a variety of sources.
Skills and Qualifications
- 7 to 10 years of experience, with a significant portion of that time spent in managerial or supervisory roles within accounting or finance departments.
- Proven experience in financial management or control, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial plant environment.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and cost control.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field. A Master’s degree or CPA (current or expired) designation is preferred
