We are seeking a highly skilled Controls Engineer with a strong background in automation and controls systems for a 6+ month contract role in Libertyville, IL. The ideal candidate will have over 7 years of experience in high-volume industrial or manufacturing environments, specifically with a project-focused background rather than sustaining support.
Key Responsibilities:- Design, program, and troubleshoot PLC systems, specifically using Allen Bradley ControlLogix and RSLogix5000.
- Develop HMI/GUI applications utilizing FactoryTalk SE and Ignition.
- Implement and maintain Allen Bradley PowerFlex VFDs and Kinetix Servo Drives.
- Configure and troubleshoot fieldbus networks, including ProfiNet, DeviceNet, Ethernet/IP, and safety-rated field bus networks.
- Conduct PID tuning and manage closed feedback loops to ensure optimal control system performance.
- Set up and maintain serial communication protocols (RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, ProfiBus, Modbus RTU, Data Highway) between PLCs and other devices.
- Manage Ethernet communication between PLCs and embedded data collection systems.
- Select and implement appropriate circuit protection, wire/cable, sensors, safety hardware, and PLC hardware.
- Work with remote I/O, VFDs, and instrumentation to support system integrity.
- Understand and work with factory LAN/WAN Ethernet networks, including IP address configuration.
- Utilize Radio Frequency Identification Devices (RFID) and their components in automation systems.
- Implement and manage vision systems (Cognex, Keyence, Fanuc) in the manufacturing process.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- 7+ years of experience in controls engineering within a high-volume industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency in programming and troubleshooting Allen Bradley ControlLogix PLCs and HMI/GUI systems.
- Strong experience with RSLogix5000, Logix Designer, Studio 5000, FactoryTalk SE, Ignition, and Cognex software.
- Demonstrated ability to design fault-tolerant systems with effective error handling and recovery strategies.
- Familiarity with setting up and tuning Allen Bradley PowerFlex variable frequency drives and Kinetix multi-axis servo drives.
- Solid working knowledge of field bus networks and RFID systems.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for effective collaboration with cross-functional teams.
- Experience in the medical device industry is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with vision systems, including Cognex, Keyence, and Fanuc.
- Experience programming and troubleshooting Beckman or B&R (ABB) PLCs.
